It's almost summer: you've put in the air conditioner, cleaned the backyard grill and repaired the window screens, but when was the last time you checked out your first-aid kit?

Summer is the peak season for household accidents. Yet experts believe only five percent of homes have a first-aid kit, and many of them aren't properly supplied. Having a properly stocked first-aid kit can really make a difference. It can save a life.

Unfortunately, just picking up a first-aid kit off a store shelf might not be adequate, nor can you count on that first-aid kit you bought five years ago. Any collection of medical supplies can be labeled a first-aid kit, and some part of a kit -- medicines, antiseptics and even bandages -- can be perishable, or at least lose their efficacy over time.

Makers of first-aid kits often don't include any medicine at all, not because something like Aspirin isn't useful (it could save you in the event of a heart attack), but because they fear potential lawsuits if the medications cause an allergic reaction.

"What you need will always depend on the situation. There's always a chance the standard kit won't be adequate," says Alkesh Patel, a physician at the family medicine clinic at the University of Maryland Medical Center. "Generally, you need to look at it once a year to check expiration dates and replace supplies."

The average first-aid kit costs about $20, but the average household might need to spend $5 to $10 more to customize it to fit a family's needs. Another key element for any first-aid kit is an instruction booklet covering situations ranging from a heart attack to what to do for a snake bite, insect sting or sprain. the American Red Cross distributes a pocket-size book, First Aid Fast.

What else should be included? The American Red Cross recommends:

1. Activate charcoal. Useful in cases of poisoning but should only be used when directed by a physician or poison control center representative.

2. Adhesive tape.

3. Antiseptic ointment.

4. Band-Aids in assorted sizes.

5. Blanket.

6. Cold pack. This is the chemical pack that becomes cold when activated and can be useful to reduce swelling.

7. Disposable gloves. Older kits might not have this but they can be a lifesaver in the age of potentially deadly blood-borne diseases.

8. Gauze pads and roller gauze.

9. Hand cleaner.

10. Plastic bags.

11. Scissors and tweezers.

12. Small flashlight and extra batteries.

13. Syrup of Ipecac. Useful to induce vomiting but only when directed by a physician or a poison control center.

14. Triangular bandage. Experts also recommended that consumers consider adding these useful extras: alcohol wipes, cleansing towelettes, Aspirin (for use in the event of a heart attack), sterile eye pads, finger splints, burn relief pads and sting relief products.
