Let me clear this up for you now. To increase the way your body burns fat, there must be an increase in your aerobic metabolism rate. What is aerobic metabolism? According to one definition, it is the creation of energy through the combustion of carbohydrates and fats in the presence of oxygen.
When you boost your aerobic metabolism, you experience less muscle soreness after exercise, and your body is forced to dig down deep into its stored sugar and fat in order to get what it needs to keep up. In other words, it burns more fat.
Without an increase in aerobic metabolism, it is unlikely that you'll burn enough fat to see that bulge on your belly disappear or to watch your love handles and hips shrink. So, the question remains, what's the best way to increase aerobic metabolism in order to burn more fat?
Here's the technical explanation of what needs to occur. According to Stanford University's Overview of Aerobic Metabolism, there are three phases to aerobic metabolism. First, carbohydrates are oxidized, producing energy-rich molecules.
Electrons from these molecules are then passed along, and free energy is released. Finally, the free energy is used to synthesize the chemical adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and to export ATP from the conversion center, called the mitochondria, to the body.
And the plain English definition? You have to have enough movement along with enough oxygen to generate a reaction between the carbs and fats in your body and the oxygen. This releases energy molecules. Those molecules create the chemical needed to burn more fat. What types of exercises combine extensive movement with oxygen? Cardio exercises (a.k.a. aerobics)!
When you think of cardiovascular or aerobic exercises, don't just consider those "girl" routines done in pink gyms all around the world with "Let's Get Physical" playing in the background. Any exercise that gets you breathing deep and moving fast is considered cardio or aerobic.
Riding a bike at a fast pace or with resistance (up a hill), jogging or running, jumping jacks, jumping rope, stair climbing, dancing, swimming, racquetball, rowing, and countless others are considered cardio exercises and will help increase your aerobic metabolism.
What about walking, weight lifting, or floor exercises such as Pilates? Those are great for building muscles, toning, sculpting, and increasing your overall health. They will not, however, give you an adequate oxygen/movement ratio to kick your aerobic metabolism into gear and burn that fat.
Does that mean your workouts have to be long? No, not at all. In fact, the rule still applies: a good, steady, cardio workout of about 15-20 minutes, three times a week can help you see dramatic improvements in fat burning.
The key word here is CARDIO. If you're looking to sculpt or tone your body, floor exercises or weights are phenomenal. If you're looking to burn fat, however, nothing works as fast, as long, or as well as boosting your aerobic metabolism rate though cardio workouts.
