Having a stressful, busy life ... or working your way through one of life's inevitable crises ... means you have to take extra-special care of yourself. It's the only way to insure that you can stay focused, on-course, and functioning when life gets really tough.

It's way too easy to let this common sense advice slide though, because most people (especially women) are used to taking care of their business interests, the other people who are depending on them, and meeting their other commitments come what may ... and too often the time and energy for all this is arranged at the expense of the resources we need for ourselves.

Once the vicious cycle starts, it's hard to pull out of it. Saying "no" isn't easy. There's always "one more" vital, important, unavoidable thing to be done. Stress clouds your ability to be rational and make good choices, and before you know it, you're running on empty and cutting back on everything you're trying to handle is going to cause even more stress and disruption for you to manage.

The other "wake-up call" however, is to suddenly find that everything falls apart. Nothing works. You get sick. Overload robs you of your ability to even think straight ... including your ability to remember, and, like a neglected engine seizing, everything shuts down.
