Use Your Mind to Recognize Stress by Ronya Banks
Stress! Stress! Stress! Even thinking, listening, or talking about stress, causes more stress. There are different kinds of stress, from positive to negative stress, from long-term to short-term stress, and physical, emotional, mental and spiritual stress, and on, and on.
There are also literally thousands of different techniques and strategies available to help you eliminate or handle stress in your life. You can get stressed-out just trying to figure out which techniques to follow.
Believe it or not, the first step to eradicating negative stress reactions in your life is to be able to recognize the signs of emerging stress before you even realize you are stressed. The following are warning signs that the BIG, BAD, STRESS monster is about to bite!
1. Thoughts racing out of control.
If you notice that you cannot seem to stop your mind from racing from one thing to another like crazy, and/or you find that you cannot seem to focus on any one thing, you may be on the cusp of being stressed to the max.
2. Muscle tightness, tension, or twitching.
Are your shoulders rising up to your ears? Or is your back or stomach tightening up into a knot? Or, is your eye muscle twitching like crazy? These are all possible signs that you are internalizing stress.
3. Shallow breathing.
How is your breathing? Are they quick, little breaths? If so, you may be getting stressed-out. People tend to hold their breath and breathe shallowly when they are getting stressed.
4. Low-grade or sudden nervousness, anger, sadness, or guilt.
Do not ignore these obvious signs of stress in the making.
5. Chewing nervously on lips, fingernails, pencils, toothpicks, food, etc....
Are you trying to chew your stress away on whatever you can get in your mouth?
6. Negative or fearful thinking.
You become what you think. Keep thinking negatively and fearing possible future outcomes, and you are ensuring yourself a great dose of stress!
7. Increased heart rate and/or blood pressure.
Guess what? If you haven't just climbed up the stairs or exercised, your heart rate and blood pressure are not supposed to suddenly increase. Notice your breathing. Do you feel like your heart is beating fast or hard? If so, you may already have one foot immersed in the stress zone.
8. Change in appetite.
Your appetite is a great indicator of your level of stress. Everyone reacts differently to stress, but if your appetite suddenly increases or disappears, look around and see what you are experiencing.
9. Clutching things in your hands with a death grip.
Are you squeezing the daylights out of whatever is in your hands? If so, what is up with that? You are probably ignoring something stressful in your environment.
10. Spacing out.
A lot of people have adopted the survival mechanism of spacing out and going "Bye, Bye? when they are beginning to feel stressed. If you are one of these people, check-in and notice whether you have checked-out.
