Lemonade
Sunkist first starting promoting its lemons with iced tea in 1915. They're a great match, but that "other" lemon drink-lemonade-has been around for centuries longer.
Although lemons originated in Southeast Asia, they migrated with traders and explorers to the Mediterranean where the first written reference to them is found in the work of a Persian poet who lived in the early 11th century. The very first uses for lemons in the Mediterranean were as ornamental plants in early Islamic gardens.
By the beginning of the 12th century, bottled lemon juice, sweetened with lots of sugar, was being produced in Egypt and exported.
Centuries later, Portuguese and Spanish explorers carried lemon trees to the New World, where they were well established in Florida and Brazil by the early 1500s.
Florida enjoyed its lemons until they were destroyed in the cold wave of 1894-95. Today, about 25% of the world's lemons are grown in the USA, chiefly in southern and central California. The remainder of the world's lemons are produced mostly in Italy, Spain, Argentina, Greece and Turkey.
The lemon is used in more ways than any other citrus fruit. Why not enjoy them in some homemade lemonade?
If everyone in your family prefers their lemonade with different levels of sweetness, let everyone mix a glass to her own taste. Provide separate containers of fresh lemon juice, sugar syrup and water, along with glasses, ice and stirrers. Start with 1-2-3: 1 part juice, 2 parts syrup and 3 parts water - and then adjust from there.
Water
Don't overlook plain old H2O in your quest to quench your thirst this summer. Not only is it the very best fluid replacement for your body, it can be a real treat for the taste buds. You'll be amazed at the flavors that pop out when you soak fresh fruits, herbs or edible blossoms in icy water.
Just combine the ingredients and chill for 2 hours. Try lemon slices and mint leaves, lime and cucumber slices, raspberries and roses, orange slices and nasturtiums, blueberries and scented geranium leaves, or any edible combination of your choice.
Relax on the porch this summer and sip away at your favorite icy refreshment!
