You just have to remember the headlines and the history. Now a new study from England confirms the obvious (as they seem to do so well.) Pop rock stars are more than twice as likely to die young relative to the general population. Moreover, "pop stars often die within a few years of achieving fame, often due to drug and alcohol abuse," reports Steven Reinberg, writing for HealthDay.

It's hardly the kind of fringe benefit one wants to associate with wealth, fame, and talent. (Ok, maybe that last item is debatable.) But still, these people have many elements that most folks would consider ingredients in a charmed life. And yet, fame and the environment it can bring, apparently inflicts a kind of stress -- and provides both unusual protection and opportunities -- in combinations that can be fatal.

Usually, money -- and the comfortable lifestyle, access to good health care, and other benefits it can buy -- can help a person live longer. But apparently not in the pop music industry ... where alcohol and drug abuse are such a huge part of the culture. As I said, the study pretty much states the obvious, but it also points to the more worrisome fact that so many young people aspire to be what rock stars are -- rich, famous, sought-after, popular, able to break the rules and live on the edge with considerable impunity -- unless you consider courting the very real possibility of an early death in a drugged-out drunken stupor a drawback.

Most people would. But when you're young and immortal, the glamour can outshine good sense, apparently. And as long as the public keeps idolizing and rewarding this behavior so richly, turning these people and their lifestyle into cultural icons ... we can pretty much guarantee it will continue.
