There it was in black and white ... right on my computer screen. The declaration that bananas are going to be extinct in 10 years ... a little tidbit I found tossed into an article I was reading on nutrition the other day. Well, that caught my attention. Maybe I'm behind the times. Maybe you've heard that story already. Maybe you threw the news aside because, with so much other stuff going on in our ever-more-hazardous world, you couldn't care less about the fate of bananas. Maybe you shrugged and told yourself ... Well, 10 years is a long time. We'll wait and see.

But this shocker didn't go down well with me ... 'cause I like bananas. And I hate hearing bad news about any old friend. So I decided to do some digging. Thank goodness for the miracles of the Internet. But while I was searching, my mind was racing. Was the human race eating the lovely golden morsels faster than people could grow them? Was their natural habitat being destroyed so that they were no longer able to grow -- or at least grow wild -- which has been the fate of way too many other species?

Had they been genetically engineered "for better flavor" or some such to the point they could no longer reproduce ... no seeds, no cuttings, no nothing? Was a disease nobody could stop trashing its way through banana plantations worldwide? What was going to happen to my old girlfriend, Chiquita when her livelihood went the way of the dodo bird?
