Don't Be a West Nile Victim!

The number of mosquitoes testing positive for West Nile Virus has risen this year to the point health officials say the risk of infection is five times higher than in past years. This is the kind of news that gets my attention! West Nile Virus is a relative new-comer on our list of worries, but it's been around long enough you've probably heard about it. It's a disease mosquitoes catch from infected birds and then pass on to the humans they bite in turn. (Mosquitoes themselves don't seem to be good for much except spreading disease, providing food for the predators -- birds, bats, etc. -- that feed on them ... and breeding more mosquitoes.)

There have already been fatalities reported this year from West Nile Virus, so clearly this is not a threat to shrug off and dismiss. True, most people infected show no symptoms ... but about 20 percent do, and since this disease can be fatal, you need to pay attention to any illness here in the summer and early autumn that feels like "the flu" -- especially if you know you've been bitten by a mosquito just prior to the onset. These flu-like symptoms include the usual list of complaints: headache, body aches, fever, nausea and vomiting.

Serious symptoms are a worsening of these: stiffness -- especially in the neck, high fever, muscle weakness or numbness, tremors, stupor, disorientation, convulsions, loss of vision, paralysis, coma. People with chronic medical conditions or compromised immune systems, children and those over 50 are especially advised to be alert. But even the young, hale and hearty are wise to take precautions.

Avoid contact with mosquitoes, use insect repellant containing permethrin or DEET on top of clothing when outdoors (mosquitoes hate the smell of DEET ... and who can blame them?), wear long sleeves and pants when outdoors, and remove any sources of standing water from your property -- for these are a necessary ingredient in the reproductive life of mosquitoes who lay their eggs in standing water. (In fact, even at our house earlier this year, we poured out several pails with small amounts of standing water which just a few days after the last rain already had mosquito larvae swimming in them.)

Highest risk of exposure comes when mosquitoes are most active ... during the relatively cool hours at dusk and dawn. Mosquito "season" may last until nearly November -- or when the first hard frost and freezing night-time temperatures come to your part of the country. Mid-August is the high point in most locales.
