Fall Prevention in the Elderly 5 Steps You Can Take to Help Your Loved One Avoid Falling at Home by Margaret Mastrangelo

It's startling but true:
- 1 in 5 people over the age of 65 who sustain a hip fracture will die within a year.
- In 2005, 15,800 people over the age of 65 died as a direct result of injury from falls.
- In 2000, traumatic brain injury accounted for 49% of fatal falls among older adults.
- Men have a 49% greater risk of mortality than women while women are more than twice as likely to sustain a fracture from a fall.
There are a number of factors that can cause a fall. That's why making these simple changes around the home can minimize the risk of falls in the first place.
1. Lighting/Stairs
- Install brighter light bulbs to ensure that areas are well lit and replace burned out lights especially in entrance ways.
- Use LED night-lights in hallways, bathrooms and bedrooms. These cost about $0.25/year to run and the photoelectric eye turns light on at dusk and off at dawn.
- If you have stairs, make sure that you have switches to turn on/off your lights at the top and bottom of your stairs.
- It's safer to turn on a light as you are entering a dark room rather than fumbling for a light switch in the dark. If you don't have overhead lights, position a lamp just inside the doorway.
- Make sure that you have handrails that extend the full length of your stairs.
2. Rugs
- Remove all scatter rugs or secure them with rubber matting or double-sided tape.
- Check thresholds for any uneven surfaces.
3. Obstacles
- Rearrange furniture to ensure that a clear path is provided to light switches, TVs etc.
- Pick up objects off the floor including newspapers, towels or clothing.
- Make sure that lamp cords, extension cords etc. are against a wall.
4. Bathrooms
- Install grab bars for easy entry in and out of the shower/tub. There are many styles of grab bars that can be secured to the floor, clamp on the tub, or attach to the walls. A quick on-line search for grab bars will show you lots of choices.
- Install raised toilet seats and/or grab bars.
- Place rubber mats in bathtubs.
5. Kitchen
- Keep objects you use regularly on lower shelves.
- If you must use a step-stool, use one with a bar rather than using chairs.
If you have trouble finding someone to help with installation of grab bars etc, contact your local Council on Aging for recommendations.
In addition, local Visiting Nurses Associations (VNAs) can provide invaluable help in getting you connected to community resources.
Finally, don't forget to talk with your health care provider who may be able to arrange for an in-home evaluation by a physical therapist.
