• Alcohol consumption is known to increase a woman's risk of breast cancer. Now a new study by the research division of Kaiser Permanente in Oakland, California, confirms that even moderate drinking -- as little as half a drink a day -- increases the odds of a recurrence in women already battling the disease by as much as 1/3.

• Another study concludes that overweight women with breast cancer face "a worse prognosis over time" than women who are not obese.

• Drugs used by women in treating osteoporosis -- the debilitating condition that weakens bones and contributes to fractures in older women -- may have the added benefit of "cutting their risk of breast cancer."

• "Bone loss and potential fractures are a known complication of breast cancer therapy," says Dr. Adam Brufsky of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute. Thus this finding brings a piece of good news in a field that seems to rarely have any.

U.S. News and World Report - Health

• Recent new mammography guidelines sparked a firestorm of controversy from some predictable sources -- namely those who make a lot of money promoting regular annual mammograms as a way of detecting breast cancer in women when the disease is in its early, most curable stages.

• The new guidelines were issues by the U. S. Preventative Services Task Force -- with recommendations that routine screenings be delayed from starting at age 40 to starting at age 50. Women who have in the past benefitted from early detection likewise raised objections and concerns about these new guidelines.

• Commentaries published in The New England Journal of Medicine state that "that mammograms reduce a woman's risk of dying from breast cancer even if she's in her 40s." The effectiveness of the practice is apparently not the major issue. In one of the commentaries, Dr. Robert Truog of Harvard Medical School writes: "The problem is that the benefit is tiny and expensive." The cost of screening women in their 40s, he says, comes out to about $680,000 per year of life gained. That's nearly $14 million to buy one 40-year-old woman 20 years of life.

• The practice of routine screening of women in their 40s has been questioned "for many years." Benefits seem to be of limited value in these younger women, and now the astronomical costs of this practice are adding to questions about its overall wisdom.

• These new recommendations do emphasize the need for women to consider their individual risk factors in making decisions about their health and choices in this matter.

• Years ago I remember speculation that suggested the high intake of dietary fat in the Western diet could be linked to the high incidence of breast cancer in the Western world -- because Japan, by contrast, had such a much lower rate of breast cancer among their women -- along with a traditional diet much lower in fat.

• Turns out those differences in disease rates much be linked to other factors in these different lifestyles -- and diets. Yet another time when "the experts" reversed themselves -- and the advice they once offered so confidently.

• Recently, large follow-up studies on the correlation between dietary fat and breast cancer have "consistently found little or no relationship."

• There does, however, seem to be a strong connection between adult weight gain and an increase in breast cancer risk. The good news is -- weight loss reduces that risk.
