This essence can help those with self-confidence issues and who are unable to trust in the goodness of other people and of the world in general. Often, of course, this is an unresolved issue from childhood, reflecting a lack of proper emotional support. In particular, there may have been problems bonding with the father or seeing him as offering adequate protection from the terrors of the world. The "guidance" he provided may also have been less than exemplary -- or gentle -- or effective.

The father himself may have been absent, uninvolved, unavailable, erratic, and / or threatening. In such conditions, the child lacks grounding for a sense of security and protection, and grows up with the message that the world is a dangerous place. A constant need to "be on guard" therefore becomes a permanent coping strategy. Defensiveness becomes a protective tactic. So may intellectual cynicism.

A feeling of lack from the spiritual side of life, or an inability to trust in spiritual resources may further impoverish the person, who then fails to investigate or incorporate spiritual pursuits into his regular life. This can lead to further problems with spiritual isolation, emotional deficiency, personal "hardness," failure to develop conscience and empathy, and even antisocial and criminal tendencies.
