What are Essential Oils?
Most of you are probably more familiar with Essential Oils than you
would think. Every time you add herbs or spices to a recipe we are using
Essential Oils.
Essential Oils or "essences" are the most potent part of the
plant. They are the plants hormones'.
An Essential oils Is a fragrant, volatile liquid. It is non oily and
highly concentrated, this is way they should never be used neat on the skin.
The volatility of the chemicals is dependant on how quickly it will evaporate.
True Essential Oils leave little or no stain with very few exceptions. They
shoul be extracted from a single botanical source.
Each Essential Oil contains many different chemical components which
react together to give the oil its unique qualities. This is why all oils have
such a wide variety of actions, and some oils have very similar actions, for
example, most oils have antiseptic qualities and many are anti-inflammatory.
Plants used for producing Essential Oils come from many parts of the
world, some Essential Oils can be produced in many different countries, for
example, Lavender is produced mainly in France, but it is also produced in
Bulgaria, Spain, Italy, Greece and many other countries. The quality of oil may
vary from country to country and, in the case of Lavender, the French variety
is thought to be the best quality.
Essential Oils are obtained from many different parts of the plant
including leaves, flowers, twigs roots and resins. There are many types of
distillation processes used to obtain Essential Oils though the main ones are
Steam Distillation, Enfleurage, Solvent Extraction and Expression. These
processes are used to gain the most or the best quality Essential Oil from the
raw plant material.
The Notes of Essential Oils
Essential oils may be classified into three types. These are known as
Essential Oils notes. The note of an Essential Oil is linked to its volatility
(rate of evaporation). Below are some feature of the different oil notes.
Top Note
- Fastest acting
- Most stimulation and upliftong to the mind and body
- Quickest to evaporate
Middle Notes
- Main effects are on the body functions
- Moderately volatile
- The heart' of the blend
- Usually balancing
Base Notes
- Sedative and relaxing
- Slow to evaporate
- Generally have a fixing quality (they can help prolong and hold
back the volatility of top notes)
A Brief Guide to Purchasing Essential Oils
When buying Essential Oils always purchase them from a reputable
source. Price can be a good indicator of quality. Very cheap oils should be
avoided at they could be pre-blended or chemical substitutes. One the
chemical composition of an oil is analysed the aroma is easily reproduced.
Unfortunately these replicas, though pleasantly smelling, have little or no
therapeutic value.
Asking the supplier where the oil was produced can be a good indicator
of quality. If the Latin name is on the bottle always check with a good book
that the name is correct. Asking suppliers where there oils are bottled may
also be worthwhile. If an oil is bottled at source it is less likely to have
oxidised, which changes the chemical structure. Checking if the oil has a sell
by date or batch number can give a good idea of quality. Essential oils usually
last from between six months to two years with few exceptions. Checking whether
the supplier obtains Gas Chromatographs for any of their oils is also
worthwhile although, in the UK these are very expensive and may not be obtained
for every single oils a supplier sells.
All of the above are general guidelines to buying essential oils.
Something you can do yourself to check oils you already have is the spill test
or blotting paper test. Put one drop of Essential Oil on a spill or a piece of
blotting paper. Top notes are highly volatile and last about 12to18 hours.
Middle notes last 2 to 3 days. Base notes tend to be heavy oils and can last up
to a week. When the oil has evaporated it should leave little or no stain
behind.
How Essential Oils Work
Essential Oils can be absorbed into the body in two main ways.
The first is by absorption through the skin via the pores and hair
follicles. This happens during an Aromatherapy Massage.
The second way is by the aromatic molecules of the oils being taken
into the Olfactory system. As we breathe in the aroma of the oil we are also
breathing in molecules containing it's components. These components are
drawn into the lungs, passing the Olfactory tract and into the limbic system of
the brain. The Limbic system is the part of the brain that stores memories. The
molecules activate the Limbic system to excrete certain hormones that are able
to act as pain killers and induce a feeling of well being.
When you go to an Aromatherapist it is not completely necessary to
have a full body massage. The therapist could just as easily send you away with
a bottle of oil he or she has blended based on the information you have given
and tell you to rub it into your body. The main reason for the Aromatherapy
massage is to induce a feeling of well-being which can then be slipped into any
time that the blend of oils passes into the olfactory system.
The application of oils, therefore, can evoke effects such as:-
- A feeling of well being and relaxation
- Being pampered and soothed
- Re-assuring if you are lacking in confidence
- Increased awareness of the body or body image
- Increase the trust levels of physical contact
- Feel better' result due to the relief of pain/tension
