Valerian has a long history in the lore of folk medicine as a remedy for insomnia, digestive upsets, tension headaches, anxiety and heart palpitations. No one is yet sure why it works -- when it works, which I'll talk about in a moment. Nor do they agree on its active ingredients. It may, in fact, work through a combination of factors. It's been used for centuries and it's widely available in pharmacies and health food stores.

So, yes, Valerian is the stand-by herbal sleep aid from way back, and while it still makes all the lists of natural sleep remedies, as far as I'm concerned, you can keep it. It doesn't work for me. From what I've read it evidently "doesn't work for everyone" -- so it comes with a big disclaimer right there. Maybe it will work for you ... and maybe not.
