It was a quiet night in O'Malley's when in walked a Texan. He cleared his throat and announced to the crowd of drinkers, "I hear you Irish are a bunch of serious drinkers. I'll give 500 bucks to any man in here who can drink 10 pints of Guinness back-to-back."
A hush fell over the bar for a few moments, then everyone resumed their drinking and chatting as though nothing had happened. All except Sheamus Morrisey, who left immediately. The Texan ordered a pint and sat alone at the bar.
Half an hour later Sheamus reappeared and tapped the Texan on the shoulder. "Is yer bet still good?" he asked. The Texan said, "Yes," and asked the bartender to line up ten pints of Guinness. Immediately your man downed one pint after another until all ten were but a memory. The ensuing cheer went on for several minutes while the Texan just sat there, dumbfounded.
When all had returned to some semblance of normality the Texan made good on his promise. As he handed the $500 to Sheamus he said, "If ya don't mind me askin', what made you come back?"
The Irishman replied, "Well, Oi was tempted by yer challenge, but Oi didn't want to look an eejit, so Oi nipped over the road to O'Halloran's to see if Oi could do it."
Out of timber so crooked as that from which man is made
nothing entirely straight can be carved.
