So, you need to get away but you don't want a retreat, and can't afford a weekend in Tibet. Here is everything you need to get the time you deserve:

Get Away From Home: Yes, you could stay at home, but only if you can easily resist answering the phone, and only if everyone else is out of town. And only if your home is so neat and clean that you won't feel guilty doing nothing.

Where? Ask around! What places do your friends know about? Consider monasteries and retreat centers. Some can be very inexpensive, especially if you provide your own lunch. How about a Bed and Breakfast or a resort class hotel in the neighborhood? Always check to see if reservations are needed for day stays and meals.

How Long? I suggest a whole day, if possible. Overnight is ideal, at least once a year. At least, for a good retreat, plan 10 - 4.

What do I Bring? Find yourself a big bag. Stuff it with any or all of these:

• Spiritual Reading: Bible, Magnificat Magazine, your current reading.
• Writing: Your journal, a notebook. Pens and pencils and erasers.
• Sustenance: Water bottle, pop (or quarters), any snacks you may want.
• Your Personal Calendar.
• A blanky: or a comfy shawl or warm sweater. You may get cold just sitting around.
• Fun stuff like a coloring book and crayons.

How Do I Prepare?

• Catch up on your sleep, or you'll be spending your time away to do just that. (It's ok if that happens).
• You may also want to check in with your spiritual director or personal coach to let them know, and to see what they suggest.
• Make a list of all those things you're worrying about, so you can rest in the fact that you won't forget to do them when you return. You may need to add to that list while on your day away.

What Do I Do on My "Day Away??

• Listen to your heart. Do what it tells you. Any combination of:
• Sit in silence. Listen. Pray. Meditate. Sit in chapel. (Do nothing!)
• Read, write, contemplate, color, draw.
• Brainstorm any project you may need creativity with. And don't be surprised if neat new ideas come to your head. Write them down.
• Walk to clear your mind.
• Do nothing.

Do Not:

• Bring your cell phone. Turn it off and leave it in your car.
• Shop.
• Go ˜out' to eat. Eat on the premises.
• Give out the number of your host for people to reach you. You won't be gone that long.

A Great Example: I regularly go to the St. Benedict Center in Schuyler, Nebraska. For $5, I can stay the entire day. I bring a salad lunch, store it in their common refrigerator, eat when I want to and avoid the lunch crowd.

I like sitting in the ˜day room' the best; it's hidden away and I don't get bothered. I usually end up napping just a little on comfy chairs. I usually take a walk outside, especially if it's nice out. Sometimes my days here are spiritual based, and sometimes I come to brainstorm and create.

Paths began to beckon Theresa when she was 12, visiting the Bridger Wilderness in Wyoming. Walking, dancing, and movement are a part of her, nourished by John Denver's musical challenge for her to "fly." She has walked up mountains and through forests in Wyoming, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. She's lived in Germany and has traveled extensively in Europe, even leading a pilgrimage.
