So what's unblocked these bloggers? What can you do?

As Robert Lee Brewer, editor of WritersMarket.com, puts it: "These writers did not sit around and wait for success to find them. Successful writers stop planning and start writing. I encourage you to do the same." More succinctly put by that nutty character in "Throw Momma From the Train": "A writer writes."

Once you've learned your A-B-Cs, it becomes a matter of simply putting pen to paper, or rather finger to keyboard. But also - and don't miss this point - a matter of reading. You learn the essence and the nuances of writing by reading people who write well.

I'd like to recommend you read Eats, Shoots & Leaves, by Lynne Truss. It's about writing, specifically "the zero tolerance approach to punctuation," and is a runaway bestseller in the UK. If you're surprised, so were the author and publisher. Not only is it beautifully written, it's funny. Well, how else could you get someone to read a book about PUNCTUATION? AND PAY MONEY TO DO IT!

Humor is the hardest to write. As someone once said, we're all a step away from tears, but getting us to laugh, ah, that takes real talent. I laughed so hard when I read the book there were tears rolling down my face, though I am admittedly a punctuation pundit. But I maintain you'll find out that you are too. It's something we all struggle with, and if you want to write something others can read, well, there's punctuation. After all, it exists to make reading easier.

Of course read the classics too, the great works of the fiction writers - that goes without saying. But read good non-fiction as well. Immerse yourself!

Don't know the difference between good and bad writing? You will soon! You'll get messages from your gut, which come about not through some mysterious process, but through much experience with the same material.

Good writing has good content and is well-written; not just a beautiful "turn of phrase," but with the sort of grammar and punctuation that makes it easy to read. It does matter that your nouns and verbs agree. It does matter that you use an adverb with a verb, and an adjective with a noun. It does matter that you make your exclamation point mean something more than, say, a period.

Easy is beautiful, yes?

Writing uncensored is a great way to begin. It's not where you want to end.
