I know of no more encouraging fact than the unquestionable
ability of man to elevate his life by conscious endeavor.

Things do not change: we change.

Time is but the stream I go a-fishing in.

In the long run men hit only what they aim at.
Therefore, though they should fail immediately,
they had better aim at something high.

If a man does not keep pace with his companions,
perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer.

If you have built castles in the air,
your work need not be lost; that is where they should be.
Now put the foundations under them.

I would rather sit on a pumpkin and have it all to myself,
than be crowded on a velvet cushion

The fact which the politician faces is merely that
there is less honor among thieves than was supposed,
and not the fact that they are thieves.

I have a great deal of company in my house;
especially in the morning, when nobody calls.

A man is rich in proportion tothe number of
things which he can afford to let alone.

I should not talk so much about myself
if there were anybody else whom I knew as well.

I have always been regretting that I was not
as wise as the day I was born.

However mean your life is, meet it and live it;
do not shun it and call it hard names.

Perfect sincerity and transparency make a great part
of beauty, as in dewdrops, lakes, and diamonds.

Hope and the future for me are not in lawns and cultivated fields,
not in towns and cities, but in the impervious and quaking swamps.

If I repent of anything, it is very likely to be my good behavior.

Say what you have to say, not what you ought.
Any truth is better than make-believe.

Nay, be a Columbus to whole new continents and worlds within you,
opening new channels, not of trade, but of thought.

You only need sit still long enough in some attractive spot in the woods
that all its inhabitants may exhibit themselves to you by turns.

Men talk about Bible miracles because there is no miracle in their lives.
Cease to gnaw that crust. There is ripe fruit over your head.

Most of the luxuries, and many of the so-called comforts of life,
are not only not indispensable, but positive hindrances to the
elevation of mankind. With respect to luxuries and comforts,
the wisest have even lived a more simple and meagre life than the poor.

To reget deeply is to live afresh.

The world is but a canvas to the imagination.

The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation.

Live your beliefs and you can turn the world around.

I do not wish to kill nor to be killed, but I can foresee
circumstances in which these things would be by me unavoidable.

It takes two to speak truth -- One to speak, and another to hear.

I have learned this at least by my experiment: that if one
advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and
endeavours to live the life which he has imagined, he will
meet with a success unexpected in common hours.

I have tried to know absolutely nothing about a great many things, and I have succeeded fairly well.
