We live in a consumer culture that has us on a perpetual quest for happiness. Unfortunately, we never seem to quite get there. It is always going to happen right after the next raise or next promotion or when we get the new house or new car.

When I was a young tiger tackling the business world, I had a smart marketing manager who would keep reminding us that "a fulfilled need is no longer a need" so, our job was to see to it that people were constantly developing new needs. After all, that's the game the way it is played now.

In the beginning, the general practice of business was "to find a need and fill it" Food, clothing and shelter were always the greatest needs and consequently were the largest industries in the world.

The flood gates for increased profits opened wide after World War II when the business world discovered they could invent phony needs for people. And that wasn't all -- even the business guys were surprised that they could convince the public that filling these new bogus needs were going to make people happy. Wow !! That was better than robbing banks.

Now, here's the rub -- no matter how much you pay, you cannot buy happiness. You already have it. You get to it by eliminating unhappiness. After you eliminate unhappiness, what's left? A happy dude, of course.

Here is a thought to get started. Most unhappiness is caused by our own outlook on life. Easy as falling off a log. Change my attitude, change my life.
