I can tell that I am becoming a bit more mature, sentences of things I wish to share often begin with 'remember when'. When I was younger, I loved to hear others speak of the 'remember when' times. There would be twinkle in their eyes as they began the journey back to some favorite memory and I, always the grateful traveller, would tag along with each word they spoke as my mind painted pictures of days long ago, some before I was born others when I was but a child.
I wanted to be sure that some day I too could have my own 'remember when' times to share. In my youth, I thought one must hold on to all the keep sakes of every special occasion or moment. So as the years went by I collected odds and ends, birthday candles, gum wraps, movie tickets, and bus fare. Shoe box after shoe box.
Why I remember even having a seven pound rock collection in peanut butter and jelly jars! I managed to keep my collection pretty much intact until moving day, when Mom announced among other objects in my collection, that my rock family was over weight and had to stay. I actually cried feeling as though I had abandoned those rocks.
I remember when I heard the news about Santa and storming out in the cold with my blue winter coat edged in white fur, roaring like a wounded lioness at the top of my lungs, tears rolling down my face, as I looked to the sky hoping that if Santa flew by he would know that THIS GIRL believed no matter what Mom said! I am equally sure the neighbors knew how I felt about the matter as well.
What I don't remember is when the turning point of stuff my life occurred but it did. One day, I began sorting and sifting through my collection of things; a faded ticket here, a shrivelled up balloon or two there, shoe box after shoe box. As I was doing this, I realized that my memories were of people and places, feelings, and senses, joy and sadness, all intangibles, none of this stuff really had any long lasting meaning.
I remember when that realization hit me, I literally sat back in my chair, an open shoe box on my lap and memorabilia spread all around me. I remember it not for the memorabilia but for the sense of freedom that truth brought to me. I laughed out loud as I realized how funny life is. Here we spend half of our life accumulating stuff and the other half downsizing. What followed was a season of reorganizing the likes of which I never thought possible, all to my husband's delight.
It was through this sifting and purging of things, that my greatest discovery came. Even though it came suddenly and without much notice, I knew what I had stumbled upon was more than just a significant emotional event. This was to become another life changing event. No feeling can describe the moment when you stand looking into your very being and see glistening before you the pureness of your very own 'remember when' treasure chest created through the delicate art of living moment by moment.
Granted I still have the childhood faded yellow piggy bank with the white baseball cap that goes up and down whenever you put money into it. And I kept my sisters old jump rope with wooden handles as well as my worn out little stuffed doggie with the floppy ears and a bell in one of them (Santa gave me that). I have all the hand made gifts from my nieces and nephews, every letter my Grandmother wrote me, the ones from my father when he was in Vietnam and all the special letters that I received from my family over the years. I even have tin boxes with the letters and cards my husband has written me, from the time we were dating to the present, sorted by year and tied with ribbons.
Some things we always will keep. And some events that we think we will remember forever, are often replaced by that which we never expected would become a cherished memory. The good, the difficult, the sadness and yes even the ugly, all that forges who we are, what we choose to become, is effortlessly woven together by the fine silk of time. If you were to ask me how things get into the 'remember when' treasure chest, I can not say. No one has ever said. It simply happens and we must be ever vigilant of the moment.
Some of my dearest 'remember when' tellers have passed on but they have each given me a most wonderful gift. For every shared moment with them you will find deep within me a sacred vault where their treasure chest of ' remember when' still lives on. They have taught me to relish every moment, for it is ours to live, to give and to 'remember when'.
