It's sometimes hard to believe the colossal audacity of the pharmaceutical industry. Their latest advertising target is people who are well. They see this as their biggest market. They have already begun on a large scale -- constantly repeating commercials advising us to talk to our doctors about drugs they are selling to "help us stay well". A different drug for each part of the body.

Just imagine taking one drug for your heart and one for your liver and one for your etc., etc., etc. AND of course, each commercial ends with a quick notification there is a risk that one or the other of these drugs might cause colon rot or stomach cramps or diarrhea or some other revolting disorder.

Newsletter etiquette limits my comments to "what crap" and "that's a bunch of meadow muffins."

This new ploy of the drug companies is reminiscent of the medicine men who roamed the old west in wagons with fold-down stages. They would set up in each town, put on a little show and then sell their magic elixir (a mixture of booze & cocaine) -- guaranteed to cure all ills. (You could be pretty sure you weren't going to feel any pain -- at least not until the booze & cocaine wore off. By that time the medicine man was on his way to another town)

Mankind is a long way from inventing a magic pill that assures us good health. We are a highly sophisticated series of mind/body functions that communicate with each other through a neurological network that science doesn't even come close to understanding at this time.

It is only in recent years that the concept of wholistic health has gained wide popularity on planet earth. Most of the best minds in medicine and medical research are in agreement that it is not possible to treat a "part" of a human without effecting the whole person. Now here's the good news -- natural selection thought of that a long time ago. It took nature millions of years of trial and error to develop the wonderous human immune system.

Our immune system is like a well organized neighborhood watch. It never sleeps. It patrols 24/7 -- always looking for the attacking microbe that might harm us. Nothing on this planet, including sharks, are as vicious as our white blood cells when it comes to dealing with an invader. No army on earth can "kick butt" like our immune system.

Well, if that's true, why the hell do we get sick?

There are a certain few microbes, such as AIDS, which attack the immune system but that is not the major reason we get sick. The problem is overload. By far and away the number one culprit overloading our immune systems is stress. Stress keeps the immune system chasing after false alarms and the exhausted system leaves itself vunerable to attack. Too many young folks equate busyness and stress with power and status instead of recognizing it as the surest road to premature death and loveless lives.

How do we eliminate stress ? Choose to be a happy person. Happy people do not feel stress.

So, is there a magic elixir that will fight all my ills and keep me well? You bet there is. It is called happiness.

Remember, happiness is mind and body in symbiotic harmony.
