My husband and I are hunkered down in our home not too far north of the Chesapeake Bay. We're awaiting Isabel. She is indeed an uninvited ... well, I don't want to say guest, but she is an uninvited arrival.
She apparently doesn't care whether or not we want her here. She's not gentle, quiet, or even friendly. I don't want to see her come, but I have no choice. She is coming.
So, rather than moan and groan about her brash flash into the neighborhood, my husband and I have decided to be prepared. We can't stop her; instead, we 'll make sure we've done everything we can to be in the best shape possible when she does get here.
The good news about interlopers such as Isabel -- she won't stay too long. She knows we don't like her before she even hits our borders, so she makes sure she gets in, does as much damage as she can, and gets out in short order.
It's that quickly-wrought damage that must concern us, and for which we must prepare. Life, in general, is like that. 'Tis true, we can't always prepare. But even in those situations, if we are in a "prepared mode," we have previously taught ourselves the important methods of survival and, first and foremost, awareness.
Here are five points that would be well-considered in any situation . . . or, better yet, in all situations:
1). Look ahead. Always keep one eye on what's to come. That doesn't mean that you should live for what might, or might not, happen. That would only waste the beauty of the present. However, you will benefit from a healthy mindset of forward-thinking behavior.
2). Be prepared. If you know a windstorm is coming and you leave your patio furniture on the deck, you have to know that it has a good chance of flying through the air -- with the greatest of ease. If you've thought ahead and prepared for that likelihood, you've saved, at the very least, the expense of buying new patio furniture and, at most, extreme damage.
3). Have needed supplies. Plain common sense. For example, let's look again at Isabel. What can happen? High winds and water are a given. It's always possible that electrical power will go out, and maybe for an extended period of time. And these scenarios aren't only likely in a hurricane.
Most environments experience bad weather at some point. How to cope? Have an "emergency" supply stock in the most accessible spot in your home. Make sure it's stocked with, at least: portable and battery-operated radio and, if possible, TV; batteries; first aid and medical supplies; personal medications (extras, if possible, and always current-dated); matches; flashlights; water; non-perishable foods that can be prepared without electricity ... and, of course, chocolate.
4). Make a recovery plan. We all go through hard times in our lives. That's certain. Shouldn't we be ready and have at least a workable idea of how to not only survive, but rebuild and again prosper? "Happy days are here again...." We need to be aware of the steps we'll have to take to be able to sing that song tomorrow.
5). Keep your sense of humor. I've a picture in my office of a wild and crazy-looking cat. The caption reads something to the effect of: "Be weird whenever possible." Take your situation seriously, especially when it's a serious situation. Yet never, ever lose sight of any and all possible funny moments.
I just glanced at the ever-present TV weather report relating the latest and greatest hurricane activity as Isabel makes her way up the coast, towards MY house. The station played, for the umpteenth time, a tape of a young man trying to move forward through a very flooded street.
This might not be odd ... if not for the fact that the guy had his bicycle with him! C'mon, folks. Isn't this funny? Why would anyone take their bicycle out in a hurricane?! I can tell you it gave me a good giggle.
So I'm laughing. Though right now I'm listening to the winds begin to whip against the outside of my house, and Isabel is yet still a few hours away, I 'm looking ahead towards tomorrow afternoon when my husband and I can venture outside, underneath the sunny sky.
Our home is full of food, emergency needs, and, of course, CHOCOLATE. The house is as prepared as it can be, and that's because my husband and I secured the outside way before the storm was even on the scope, though we knew it was coming.
But, boy, I can say for certain that right now I'm leaning heavily on Point #1 (looking ahead) and Point #5 (keeping my sense of humor) ....
