Sam's voice seemed to boom throughout the neighborhood early Sunday morning. I worried about the neighbors being upset by his raucous, young boy noises.

He is a tenacious, goal driven almost three year old. He had basketball and togetherness on his brain and nothing was going to deter him.

He didn't just want to play with his Little Tykes hoop, he wanted to aim for the big hoop. He was not put off by our backboard which was knocked over by a big wind-rain storm a few weeks ago. It was on the ground at a really odd angle.

He pushed on it. It didn't budge.

He came to me and pulled me to my feet. Sam is little for words and lots for desire and action. I walked to the backboard and said, "Sam, this is too heavy for Mommy," promptly setting it on it's side, exactly where Sam wanted it to be.

It made the basket into a perfect, almost three year old target.

At first I certainly couldn't see that.

It looked like it would never be a target he could hit. It didn't even look like a target I could hit.

I set aside my copy of Diane Ackerman's "A History of the Senses" for a moment. Sam handed me the ball as he wanted to see how I managed the basket.

I focused on the hoop, flexed my muscle just so and swoosh, the ball went through the unusually sloped basket. It was as if I had been shooting at the basket-in-this-incarnation for decades. "Good shot!" celebrated Sam.

Sam grabbed the ball and stood next to me as closely as he could and not knock either himself or me over and focused on the basket. His eyes blazed with intention and his arm catapulted the ball into the air.

Swoosh, it went through the hoop.

Sam lifted his arms over his head and jumped up and down. "Good shot! I did it!"

He moved around the yard, shooting from different angles, each time noticing what worked and what didn't. The strategy was the same. I stayed in my chair, observing him and reading my book.

Focus. Catapult the Ball. Assess. Focus. Catapult the Ball. Assess. Celebrate Successes and Try from a different angle. Repeat.

Notice the importance of experimentation. Without "catapulting the ball" or putting the focus into action, nothing would happen. Sam and I would still be sitting there, looking at the basket and holding the ball.

We would miss out on the ongoing assessment, the growth and my personal favorite, the celebration.

Also notice my initial thought about the basket itself, "Oh, Mommy can't move this, Sam" and yet his persistent questing elevated me into suddenly being able to move the basket effortlessly. The result? An extremely Sam friendly level.

Katherine joined us and on her first attempt to make the basket, some people would have labeled it a "failure."

I said, "Here, Katherine, watch how I move my arm when I shoot the basket. Watch how I aim the ball upwards first so gravity can just scoop the ball into the basket."

I focused, catapulted and swoosh the ball went in. "Good shot!" celebrated Sam as he passed the ball to Katherine.

You might remember me writing about Sam and basketball in the past. Back then, Sam was not the one making the shots. He was enjoying handing me the ball so that I could shoot baskets.

I might have "Jordan" in my name, but I do not share Michael's athletic prowess.

I do, however, have the ability to focus, catapult, assess and repeat.

That's all it takes.

No matter where you are now in your current project, you can focus, take action, assess and repeat.

This is how Edison made it through his 999th attempt at formulating the lightbulb. This is how many, many, many "instant successes" are made.

Focus. Act. Assess. Celebrate each part of the process. Repeat.
