I'm not afraid of heights. Never have been. I'm not afraid of roller coasters either. And I'm not afraid of ferris wheels. I am however, afraid of falling to my death.

I don't know anyone who isn't afraid of falling to their death, unless they are in a position where they want to or are ready to die in this manner.

See, I'm not afraid of heights because just about any time I've been somewhere very high, it's been in a secure situation. If I'm on a tall building, it's behind a window or an observation deck. I trust that the people who engineered and designed the building have built the appropriate precautions into their work so that I will not go crashing through any part of where I am and fall to my death.

Same with roller coasters and ferris wheels. I trust that the designs on these are such that as long as I do not do anything contrary to their warnings, I will not become airborne when I don't want to be. Not only that, I trust that the people who are in charge of regulating these things and these people have been doing a good enough job so that these things haven't slipped through the cracks of the system.

So far, so good. Right now I'm 39 years old and have not had any accidents related to any of the above mentioned things. Neither has anyone I personally know.

I suppose I could find some news stories of people who have fallen off buildings or roller coasters or ferris wheels. But I choose not to go looking for the exception to the rule. The point I'm trying to make is that there are structures in place so that we don't have to be afraid of things. Things that have the potential to cause real danger, I avoid. Loaded guns, bungee jumping, professional wrestlers...all these I steer clear of.

The fear doesn't come from the THING ... the fear comes from INSIDE. The James-Lang Theory of Fear: we are not afraid of things. We are afraid of our physiological reaction to the thing we fear.

Think about it. When we experience something that stimulates a fear reaction, the fear is in that pit of the stomach feeling. Example: you slip on ice while you walk, but steady yourself before you fall down. Then a second later you experience the physical reaction of fear ... the panic feeling in the stomach. Even though you know the thing you fear has passed. Pretty interesting, huh?

Know what that could mean for you?

If you know that what you fear is something you can anticipate, understand and control, how much easier would it be for you to do things that cause the sensation of fear? You "fear" new situations, but the reality is you are in a structure that is just as safe as the tall building or the roller coaster. You fear the REACTION.

So think about that which causes you the most anxiety. Think about how safe you actually are when you confront it. Think about how much easier and better your life will be when it no longer stimulates fear.

Anticipate and welcome the fear response ... and go out and conquer!
