Almeda's Sunday

When she left the native land, Almeda also left behind her oldest child: her son Demothi, who preferred to stay with his father. Then, three years ago, Onida, now a young woman, decided to leave for Europe: She preferred to live and study there from then on, because that continent harbored a country where many of her fellow natives had come to build their new nests. So Almeda had to let go one more of her offspring--

Almeda's eye catches a tiny spider web against the ceiling while she ponders the unforeseen paths along which her life has developed. She realizes that, as outsiders, the past years have provided her and her children with a packet of valuable insights, which those in similar positions will certainly recognize, and others, who take an unthreatened lifestyle for granted could consider if they care to.

Almeda now knows, for instance, that she will never again look down on anybody's living circumstances. "You never know what preceded the situation you encounter," she muses. "The very place I pull my nose up for today may be mine tomorrow, as I never know what fate has in store for me."

Having gone through the motions, Almeda now understands that a large number of the people who start a new life in a strange country don't do that because they really desire their current location that much, or because they used to be so terrible of in their home country. On the contrary! Many of them used to occupy high positions and an elevated status in the place where they came from!

"It is that very fact," realizes Almeda, "that allows outsiders like us to now maintain a minimum quality of life in a strange, insecure, and totally different country, for we certainly cannot live from what we earn!"

Another valuable lesson that flashes through Almeda's head is, that she learned to believe in good outcomes. She smiles, as she thinks of the countless times in the past five years, when she wondered how she would make it though the month. Looking back, she still doesn't know how she did it.

"A human being must really be an agile creature that can maneuver him -- or herself through the craziest of times with the right amount of determination, humility, and soberness," she ponders.
