While a bird is tirelessly singing its tune outside, Almeda is sitting in her den, showered and dressed, armed with a cup of coffee, on Sunday morning at 7:34, a time when most people are probably still lying on one ear.

No, she doesn't need to go anywhere. In fact, the day stretches itself before her as a stuffy, monotonous desert, with a dual oasis, the preparation for tomorrow's job-assignment, and the moment that her daughter, Dakota, will return home from her Sunday event.

Dakota left about an hour ago to sell the clothing she designed and produced in the past week, at a Swap Meet in Hollywood. She is only 19, but she cannot get a normal job like other youngsters, because her status does not allow that: Dakota is Almeda's dependant, and Almeda is but a guest worker with a permit that ties -- and at the same time limits -- her to one employer. And unfortunately, that employer can only provide her with part time employment.

So, life is not all that easy: money is a narrow fringe, and it requires magical skills to keep treading water in an expensive time and an expensive city. But faith, hope, and stubborn determination keep Almeda and Dakota going.

Almeda exchanged her old home country for a new one a number of years ago: five to be exact. And she tried to live by the rules. She still does. "Not much else to undertake when you're residing with two women in a country that is still culturally, economically, habitually, educationally, socially, and environmentally fairly strange to you," Almeda mumbles.

So why did Almeda relocate? Because once upon a time the situation in her native land became economically turbulent and emotionally unbearable. And although economical turbulence was usually considered an advantage to small entrepreneurs like Almeda was at that time, the combination with emotional instability made it a deadly one.

So Almeda packed her bags and her two daughters, Onida and Dakota, and left for a place where they would not run into too many old fellow countrymen with their fellow country attitudes and their fellow country gossips.
