It was not necessarily a welcome sound a few hours ago and now, in retrospect, I am ever so grateful for it.

I was peacefully sleeping at 4:55 am until I heard my new dog, Hank, barking. At what? I can't tell you. I mentally reviewed the night before with one eye barely opened and the other firmly shut, hoping he would stop barking.

I realized I hadn't fed him his canned food during the human dinner hour. I guessed he was hungry.

His barking started to get the attention of the dogs in the backyard next door. I knew it was time for me to take action.

I didn't get angry or complain.

It wasn't Hank's fault, it was merely a part of the "getting to know you" process which happens when you bring in a new family member whether they are human or animal.

I found my way into the kitchen to feed Hank and his new sister, Buttercup.

They gratefully accepted the food, which gave me time to get changed into walking clothes and alert Katherine to my soon-to-be absence as I was going to be walking the dogs.

I connected Hank to his blue leash and Buttercup to her pink leash and we were off into the still dark morning. I had neglected to put on my contact lenses so not only was it dark, things were visually fuzzy.

It helped me to use my other senses to fully experience our journey.

The soles of my feet echoed with each step on the pavement. My nose gulped the essence of the pre-sunrise-morning air. My skin felt the surprisingly cool air lick it playfully. My bicep felt the tug of Buttercup as she sniffed each interesting nook and cranny and then sniff out the next and the next and the next.

I arrived back home after a full 45 minute trek feeling alive and engaged with the day itself.

This is life.

This is presence.

This is joy.

This is passion.

I could have gotten angry at Hank for waking me up.

I could have gotten angry with myself for not feeding him at the family dinner time.

I could have made the timing wrong or my lack of contact lenses wrong or virtually anything wrong.

Instead, I focused on the present, the gift, the special delivery of the grey morning.

Each of us has that option in every thing we experience, whether it is in a business decision or personal time management or in choosing a hobby or making an investment or responding simply to what shows up at 4:55 tomorrow morning.
