I didn't realize my parenting strategy had roots in the thoughts of a 17th Century Scottish philosopher. I just thought it was wiser to affirm my hurt and crying children with something positive rather than what I considered to be unkind and the way too common, "Don't cry, you are going to be ok, don't cry."

It's natural and cleansing to cry. I feel better myself when I cry. So what do I tell my children when they get hurt and cry? "You are so brave."

It worked until my six-year-old realist Emma said, "No I am not brave, that is why I am crying!"

I kept hugging her and said, "You are getting braver with each tear out of your eyes. It's ok to cry, feel those emotions you feel. Don't hold them in. I love you when you feel frightened and when you feel brave. I am with you no matter what."

How many times do our hearts long to hear those last seven words those we love and admire?

I am with you no matter what.

Those seven words are sacred. Like gifts, given when we are present to the other person's preciousness.

Saying "I am with you no matter what." means "I love you even when it hurts" and "I care even when you think you have failed" and "Your soul is so much more important than any outcome that is created." and "You are not the results: you are appreciated just because you are you."

I tell my children, "You are so brave" and they become brave.

You tell your children, "You are absolutely beautiful!" and they believe it and become absolutely beautiful.

You tell yourself, "I can live with passion everyday." and you begin right then and there to integrate more passion into each moment.

Remember those seven sacred words? "I am with you no matter what."

Patiently stay with others, patiently stay with yourself no matter what. Even when you forget you are beautiful and choose to see ugliness instead, even when you forget to feel passion and instead fall into dark resignation, even when you feel frightful rather than brave stay with yourself, stay with those you love -- especially with your true self -- no matter what.
