That Sense of Awe

After they emerge from their nest in the creek bed they blend in with the habitat for a few months before slowly making their way down stream to the ocean which might take as long as a year. Sometimes the nests can be over a 100 miles from the ocean depending on the river or the creek.

Once near the ocean they make their habitat in the estuary which consists of fresh and salt water as they become gradually accustomed to the salt water. Once they are ready they begin their journey in the ocean sometimes traveling thousands of miles only to return to the estuary a few years later to prepare for the final phase.

The salmon that have survived human and ocean predators become reacclimated to the fresh water in the estuary and begin the journey home. After waiting for the rains to fill the streams they begin the long journey upstream to return to where they were born. It is in this last struggle when they don't eat that they change color to the beautiful reddish color that we are familiar with.

As they battle upstream to return to their birthplace they overcome one obstacle after another sometimes jumping small waterfalls and rapids. And the ones that make it back continue the spawning cycle bringing with them the nutrients from the ocean for the ecosystem. Because the journey of return took all their energy soon afterwards they die and become food for the local wildlife.

This miraculous journey deepens my belief in the interconnectedness of all of our species. The salmon nourished by the nutrients from the ocean are able to feed us and contribute to the sustainability of the ecosystem. My new understanding of their journey and the obstacles they overcame makes me profoundly aware of how much more there is to experience.

It makes me excited about the quest for more meaning in my life and more optimistic knowing there is a much larger presence and intelligence out there. The quest for this connection and understanding excites me and I know is never ending.

When we feel connected to each other, to nature and to this empowering presence we know we are not alone. From this place of knowing, we know what is possible in our lives is unlimited. As you go forward in this New Year it is my hope that you feel a renewed sense of hope and optimism. The next time you eat salmon think of the miraculous journey that was made so that you could be nourished. May you be inspired by this journey.
