You never know how it's going to turn out ... your life that is. Along the way there are always going to be surprises, some good and some not so good. But whatever they are you keep on going, staying open to the joys and sense of the miraculous that is always possible when you are present This is how my year started.

On New Year's Eve we had plans to have dinner with our close friends Ken and Laura who have two daughters the same age as our girls. Much of the dinner conversation pertained to what our kids were doing that evening.

As part of the conversation Laura mentioned there were spots along the creek where you could see the salmon spawn. I thought that sounded like a cool thing to do but I knew I would be staying up late picking up my teenagers and would be sleeping in.

After a stressful evening waiting for the teens I ended up getting very little sleep and awoke at 7:30 feeling exhausted. As exhausted as I was, I got dressed and started driving toward Samuel Taylor State Park in search of the salmon.

It had been raining in Marin pretty consistently for the last three weeks and I couldn't remember seeing the sun. To my surprise as I headed over White's Hill I saw the most spectacular rainbow. It isn't like I haven't seen rainbows before but this one was breathtaking and rejuvenated my spirit.

As I drove around looking for the spot Laura had mentioned I noticed a man standing by his truck. I got out of my car and asked him if he knew where the salmon were spawning. He raised his arm and pointed in the direction of a small bridge. I drove down to the bridge, got out of my car and there they were; big colorful reddish salmon spawning in very shallow water, approximately 18 inches deep.

It was a double dose of the miraculous; first the rainbow and then the salmon. As it started to rain heavily again I went back and began a conversation with the man on the side of the road whose name was Andrew. He said, "This is God's country". And I replied, "I think it is"

A few days later I kept thinking of the salmon and returned to the creek and started thinking about the significance of it all.

"For my part, I will be thinking about what salmon are trying to teach us. That there is a way for us humans to be, just as there is a way for salmon to be. That we are related by virtue of the places to which we choose to return. " Freeman House

Reflecting upon their journey I knew that in 3-4 years some of the salmon that were spawned here would in some miraculous way return to this same spot. Scientists do not agree on how they are able to do this but this is how the journey begins.
