I stood on the porch that overlooks the entrance to Bakersfield Community Theatre. I finally had a moment away from my duties as light operator. I was enjoying being a tech person, yet it was also rather exhausting to learn and implement a new skill -- especially when you are a soul who is committed to excellence.

Kelli was sharing the moment with me. Out of the blue she said, "I am losing Pixie as narrator. She might not make it back next week."

After that my mind goes fuzzy.

I know I somehow volunteered myself in case Pixie couldn't make it back, but I am not exactly sure how it happened.

This was on Sunday.

The following Tuesday I called Kelli and left a message on her voice mail. I asked, "How aggressively should I be studying these lines?"

Kelli called me several hours later and said, "Consider it a done deal -- you will be going on in that place this weekend."

I am not sure what word would describe the energy I felt coursing through my veins at that point. Excited? I wouldn't say exactly excited. Nervous? No, I wasn't entirely nervous, either.

Inspired? Yes, a little inspired. Wondering which button marked "insanity" I pushed when the view went fuzzy during my conversation with Kelli?

That seems to be the closest estimation.

My schedule already has almost every single ounce of juice squeezed from it -- how could I possibly think I could add in a lead role in a play --with only days to memorize and only one rehearsal before going on stage?

Therein lies part of the problem in only thinking with the intellect. If I had looked at only what was "reasonable" I would have ended up losing out on a lot.

You see, a week after my phone call with Kelli, I performed in "The Ghostly Maiden".

My friend Kevan described my stint as the Narrator as "flawless." For a while I felt a bit - no, more than a bit - nerve wracked - though I never allowed it to get into the scarcity based "overwhelm" mode.

Instead, I focused on the glorious gifts I received from making a contribution to a community which means a lot to me.

The immediate blessings included:

1.) I connected with old friends and acquaintances in the theatre community who were all aware of my special, unique effort.

2.) I made many friends and made friends with people who had seen my work on stage but had never known me as a colleague. The cast members thought I was helpful as the light board operator, but as a cast mate -- our friendship developed to a different level.

3.) I received tons of acknowledgment from many different sources.

4.) I stretched my abilities -- moved from "I think I can" to "I know I can" to "Watch me!" faster than I knew that I could -- until now.

5.) I have another line on my acting resume and I didn't have to invest weeks and weeks of rehearsal to earn it.

I am so glad I allowed myself to speak a truthful, heartfelt YES through the fuzz which reigned in my mind and causes me still to not completely remember that fateful conversation with Kelli.

Unfortunately at times we choose to get stuck in the fuzzyness instead of flourishing in saying "Yes" to the direction your heart calls. This does not mean we say "YES" to everything -- it means you move towards your heart call and trust the rest will fall into place.

Once you know your heart call, you will know "by heart" that the answer is "Yes!"
