Sandy and I quickly crossed the busy street. The four wide lanes were the last barrier before reaching the park. Sandy sniffed the grass on the other side much like the rejoicing chicken who happily crossed the road.

I paused while Sandy sniffed before we walked onto the dirt path which meandered off the more traveled bike-jogging-walking path. My memory echoed with an intention I had spoken aloud the day before: "Wouldn't it be wonderful if I started to jog and sing tomorrow morning in preparation for the play -- yes, it would be wonderful and I will do it."

I looked down at my blonde, furry companion and said, "Ok, Sandy, here goes."

I started jogging.

I haven't jogged regularly in years. During my sophomore year in college I used to jog a couple miles every day. I grew to love it. I even looked forward to it.

That was more than twenty years ago.

I also knew the movement my director assigned me for my two rollicking solos in "Songs for a New World" required a heightened level of fitness, breathing and singing. The perfect solution seemed to be jogging and singing, a la participants at boot camps across the globe.

I started singing.

"I can run and I can sing!
I can do most anything!
With my body, I can groove
Watch me, watch me as I move

I am," rest rest "so blessed" rest rest "I am so blessed, so blessed!"

I smiled at myself, this was actually enjoyable.

"I can sing and I can run
This is really so much fun
I can sing and I can breathe
Happily give and receive

I am," rest rest "so blessed" rest rest "I am so blessed, so blessed!"

Two stanzas down and I was pleasantly winded. Sandy and I kept walking.

I laughed and was pleased with my progress. I had now jogged and sang more than I have ever jogged and sang ever before. Hooray! Celebration material.

Sandy and I walked some more and I thought, "Let's go for three stanzas."

I was still smiling as I sang verse two and encouraged my heart and breath to go for a third stanza. "Add to the increase" I told my heart.

I saw a man stop jogging on the more traveled path to the right. As I headed back along the street our paths intersected. He checked his wristwatch. I noticed he was wearing a trashbag next to his skin underneath his t-shirt.

Sandy and I kept walking.

I saw a woman in bright pink pants ambling towards us. Her wide brimmed hat was festive yet the sun blanched her over ripe, wrinkled face anyway. She stopped to admire Sandy. She smelled like Mrs. Shriner, one of our first grade teachers.

She and I passed some time in conversation. I realized the cheerful hat was more for appearances than it was utilitarian. I enjoyed our brief, friendly conversation. Sandy wagged his tail in agreement.

We headed down the street and I thought I would give it one more shot. "Can I sing four stanzas this time?"

I started to jog.

I started to sing.

And sing.

And sing.

And sing.

Four stanzas.

I might not be the most graceful singing runner. I might not be the most on pitch singing runner. I might not be the most stylish singing runner.

What I am is a very committed singing runner.

I jumped up and down after I sang the last stanza.

I happy-high-fived myself.

Sandy accepted my pat on his head and wagged his tail more.

The joy was from the stretching beyond what I thought I was capable of doing.

The joy was from adding to my own increase.
