What sort of impression do you give the instant you meet someone? Is it an immediate sense of warmth that the other individual feels emanating from you? Do they sense your sincerity -- or lack of it? Let me tell you about Kay.

Kay knew how to make people welcome. It was her purpose in life. And I believe we can all learn a lesson from her....

Soft reddish hair. Gentle, smooth skin. A bright quick smile and an impish glint in pretty blue eyes. Such a tiny body that, when you hugged her, it was almost like holding a child. Yet there was no mistake ... her grasp was firm and tight, and she was as tough and hard as a drill sergeant when necessary. A clearer picture of opposites was rarely found in a woman. I came to know her when she was in her mid fifties, years and years ago.

My first memory of Kay is from when her oldest son, my ex-husband, brought me home to meet her and his father for the first time. We all sat in the living room and she watched me carefully. I was clearly welcomed into her house the moment I stepped over the threshold.

I could see in those piercing blue eyes that she knew something was up. She was aware that I wasn't just "some girl." She told me later that she was certain her son was serious when he brought me into their house. He'd never brought home a girl before.

That night I felt Kay looking into me. She knew I would likely become a part of her life. I was only 21 years old. Little did I know at that particular moment that she would become a very big part of my life -- for my eternity.

From that night forward, she treated me as if I'd always been family and forever would be. But what was most telling was not that she'd already figured out my place in her son's world and, therefore, hers. What was truly the most amazing part of our first "interview" was the fact that even though she knew I meant something important to her eldest son, she treated me no different than she would anyone new in her home.

You see, Kay treated almost everyone as family. It was her nature. I came to know her well, and her reactions to people. She'd meet someone and immediately extend her hand. She'd ask them to repeat their name so that the next time she greeted them she could do so as an old friend.
