I've been around long enough to know beyond a shadow of a doubt that life is rarely fair, often emotionally draining and sometimes downright hard. Despite forcibly-grafted traces of jaded practicality, I happily confess that Hope is alive and well, and painting her toenails a vibrant shade of purple in the gauzy recesses of my head. More often than not, I prefer my happy little inner world to the harshness of reality. There are times, however, when the two meet, and it never fails to surprise me.

The amazing thing about our inner worlds is that we know what we want and we get it. There are no obstacles or repercussions. There are three rather wonderful principles involved : want it, see it, get it. Such a deal, right?

The real world, however, is populated by such nasties as Time (is there ever enough?), Money (I'm sorry, but money is a stupid concept and it makes us all crazy), and Other People's Needs (if you have ever spent more than five minutes in the company of a child you understand exactly how this can impact your mood, let alone how you live your life). I don't care how many self help books you've read, or how good your therapist may be, there is no way to fully control any of these things. I find this hugely annoying, but I deal.

Now when parts of the two worlds meet, some really cool stuff happens. I don't mean that suddenly the entire J Jill catalog is in my closet just because I want it, but that really would be cool. Instead, there are times when what you want is also what you need, and it manifests.

Now, clicking your heels together and wishing really, really hard will only result in blisters on your heels and a dull headache. What I mean, rather, is first imagining what effect something would have on your life, and going about your day consciously aware of this one thing.

We all want a better life, and more often than not, simply acknowledging a need opens our eyes to possibilities never previously considered. It also changes the vibe we put out to others, clearing the way for healthier relationships, more fulfilling work, etc.

I remember driving home from the courthouse on the day of my divorce hearing. I had no source of adequate income. I had two dependant children. I had lost a life, an identity, and a purpose. I was also overwhelmed by the possibilities in front of me. It amazed me that I was not consumed by worry. Instead, for the first time in my life, probably, I felt I could do anything.

In the following months, things just fell into place allowing me to carve out a life I never could have imagined before. Now, things are hardly ideal, and more often then I care to admit, I get through the day only by the skin of my teeth. The fact remains, a better life than I previously knew manifested when I was ready to live it.

The tricky part isn't wanting something, or even needing something. It's becoming ready to have it in your life. Now, that is when things really get interesting.
