Have you ever found yourself unable to keep up a spiritual practice? I'm not talking about an occasional or brief lapse, and I'm not talking about practices that require so much time you need to stop to have a life. I mean something like not writing morning pages after having done them 4 or 5 times a week for a year, or not showing up for 15 minutes of meditation. I have.

My number one rationalization for this phenomenon is that I've outgrown the practice. I have integrated it so thoroughly into my day-to-day life that doing it is redundant. Close on the heels of this notion is the awareness that I need the time for something else. (15 minutes? Come on!) This argument caries the most weight when I believe that I have a problem and need to solve it. That's when I get very, very busy.

This busyness feels somehow covert, as if there is something about it I must not let anyone see. It also has the character of an escape; it feels like I am being impelled away from rather than toward something. This week I nailed what's going on: This kind of busyness is not about doing more, it's about being less.

As soon as I got it, it made perfect sense. Not only is simply being rarely simple, inclining me to avoid it when I don't feel "good at" it, but when I simply be, there I am, being me. Ick. It's one thing when simply being connects me with a larger consciousness or allows me to witness my thoughts (very entertaining), but there are times when something in me is quite certain that to simply be would be, well, simply sucky.

Simply being feels terrific when I know I'm not in charge. When I'm paying attention to the cues instead of directing the show, I feel like a star. It is difficult to fail when the Director has a good eye for talent. When I do what is mine to do and keep my nose out of what's not I, feel blessed, fortunate, and adorable. Given how much I like to be adorable, you'd think I'd remember that I'm just an actor and avoid taking on other jobs.

The truth is, I am a very grateful actor most of the time. But when I'm cast in a role that's outside my comfort zone or given unexpected revisions to a script, I can feel overwhelmed. How will I learn all those lines, not to mention plumbing the depths of my role to find the right relation to new characters and events? I quickly devolve from a star effortlessly practicing her craft to a tightly strung diva, mad as hell but determined not to let them see her sweat. At times like this, the last thing I want is to simply BE.
