I've lived most of my life as though there is not enough time. That there is not enough time has been so clear to me that I never thought to question it. "Not enough time" was a fact.

I find it curious that at 51, an age when life is demonstrably short and glancing at the date gives a predictable shock (it's July 20th -- what happened to January?), I've begun to wonder how there can possibly NOT be enough time. Not enough time for what?

I can hear my 24 year old self impatiently explaining, "Not enough time for all the things I want to DO, all the places I want to GO, all the things I want to KNOW." (I'm reminded of the Book Woman tee shirt I found in a drawer under the bed during my semi-annual purge. It proclaims, "So many books, so little time."

My 24-year old self doesn't expect me to understand; I'm clearly no longer a player in the game of life. These days I go to the grocery store without makeup and wearing pants that make my butt look big. When I pass cows and horses I say hello to them. (I used to hate it when my mother did that.) I don't shave my legs every day.

With fond respect for my younger self and heaps of appreciation for her grooming, it is no longer apparent to me that doing things, going places, and knowing things constitute an adequate standard for a life well-lived. I am sincere in my respect for the younger Molly for whom living at anything less than breakneck speed was a cop out.

Given my bias that where there is a pattern there is functionality, I imagine that racing time was one way that the younger me thin-sliced, sorting through life's dizzying array of options.

As I turn my attention toward location at the expense of speed, I feel occasional pangs of guilt. Am I letting my younger self down by relaxing my grip on yesterday's ambitions? Do I betray her concern for social justice when I savor the taste of simple contentment, memorizing it as I used to memorize righteousness?

Perhaps I do betray her. (Not that I assume that's a bad thing, which irritates the hell out of her. Aren't old people simply maddening?) But how can that be? She was the sole instigator of our supposedly shared ventures. Neither one of us is real in any kind of ongoing way, so to think of one of us betraying the entails a sudden-encounter-with-the-ridiculous.

My younger self, however perseverant she appeared, has always been and will always be evanescent. She arises and vanishes in the blink of an eye, present for just long enough to make a tiny stitch in space-time, a stitch she pretends she can string into a continuous self. Poor girl. Her project is a cosmological impossibility, yet she is utterly committed to it. No wonder she races time.
