"Ratne" Ratnakara was a humble man. As a university teacher, he wore a white shirt, khaki trousers and sandals every day. He rode his bicycle everywhere -- from his lovely home to campus, and from campus to the nearby Buddhist monastery, where he taught meditation classes. He was soft-spoken but his laugh was twinkly and bright. He had a quiet charisma and calming presence without ever drawing attention to himself intentionally.

One day, after morning meditation, he pulled me aside. "Where are you going?" he asked.

Taken aback by this question, I launched into a long story about how I had to wade across the shallow river, watching for crocodiles, to get back to the Young Men's Buddhist Association, where I was staying. I told him that I was tired because the night before, a bat in the dormitory room made me too anxious to sleep. I let him know that news of a cobra in the monks' restroom that morning had me a bit agitated as well.

He listened patiently, and then said, "I meant, 'Where are you going with your meditation?'"

Chagrined, I stammered, "I ... I ... what do you mean?"

Ratne smiled and said, "Please come to my home to share lunch with my wife and me. Let us talk about where you are going."

During that lunch and subsequent evenings, Ratne and his lovely wife, Siri, spent hours asking me questions and sharing stories. He told me things about my life that were, frankly, hard to believe. I listened, somewhat dubiously, as he told me that I would play a unique role in the development of mindfulness. I couldn't imagine what he was talking about.

Flash forward twenty years. For three nights in a row, I have a dream. Ratne is saying this name to me: "Carsten. Carsten. Carsten."

The only Carsten I knew of was a fellow alumnus of the University of Puget Sound. I knew that he had also been to Sri Lanka at a different time and studied with Ratne. I'd heard he lived in Portland, near me. I looked him up and sent a somewhat strange email to him, saying I'd had this dream, isn't it funny, maybe we should meet.

For several days, I didn't hear anything. I figured that was that.

Then I got an email. Carsten told me that he was sorry for the delay in responding, but he had been in Sri Lanka visiting Ratne's widow, Siri, and his son, Deva. He wanted to meet as soon as possible.

Now, four years after meeting, Carsten and I are coordinating a mindfulness retreat in Sri Lanka, led by Deva Ratnakara. We've learned a lot about mindfulness, and we're honored to introduce others to these teachings.

This time, we'll be staying in a lovely eco-resort. I won't have to worry about cobras, bats, or crocodiles.
