So we head for the chicken salad. And she's absolutely right. It IS the best. The sandwich shop is one of those little hole-in-the-wall places whose charm rests in its almost complete lack of anything resembling an effort to update its decor. That's okay. With chicken salad that tastes like this, who needs it?

So then I really begin to listen to the inner voice. And as I do, I become more and more serene, actually looking forward to our trip around the corner. Besides, I could really use a cup of coffee for the road.

We proceed to the diner. "Cut through the parking lot, Mom, because we need to go in through the back so I can show you the courtyard."

And I see why.

Laura's mom greets us as we come in. She proudly points out the features she's added since taking over the diner several months ago. A wonderful mural was already painted on the brick wall, but she completed the festive decor with additional tables brightly adorned with umbrellas and placemats. I've fallen in love with the place already, and I haven't even gone inside.

We proceed through a second room, as delightfully decorated as the first, with more tables for customers.

And then we enter the front of the diner, where the meals are prepared. I hear a voice yell, "Hi MOM!" It's a greeting from my daughter's friend Laura, who helps her mom each day before going on to another job in the evening.

Having only two children of my own, I always feel special when any of their friends call me "mom." After all, you just can't have too many children, can you? :-)

And other friends come in from time to time as well - all college students, earning some extra cash waiting on tables when the crowds get heavy. And they're getting heavier all the time, from what I understand. After eating some of the cake my daughter raved about, I'm not surprised.

I don't know what it was that came over me as we sat at the counter. But at that moment, drinking my coffee, eating the delicious cake with the fantastic caramel icing, and enjoying the back-and-forth banter of the young college students, I felt like I could have stayed there forever.

I know it sounds so trite, but we really do need to take time to stop and smell the roses. And the best way to do that is to grab those opportunities as they present themselves. Trying to "manufacture" magic moments is pointless. It can't be done.

So I'm so glad I let her talk me into staying, because it was delightfully refreshing.

And my reward was that, even though I left much later than planned, got caught in heavy rain at EVERY construction zone on I-20 between Tuscaloosa and Atlanta, and didn't hit the perimeter until 4:30 p.m. on a RAINY afternoon, I still managed to dodge major traffic and pulled up in my driveway at 5:00 p.m. on the nose. Not five minutes later, after I was safely tucked inside my home, a thunderstorm hit, bringing with it driving rain along with heavy thunder and lightning.

Who says that God doesn't exist?
