Maybe it's because I'm getting older. I don't know.

But life's simple pleasures are just becoming more and more important to me these days.

And they just seem to pop up when and where I least expect them.

For example, I was visiting my daughter in Tuscaloosa, Alabama yesterday. And I was desperately trying to leave town so that I could hit the Atlanta metro area no later than 3:00 p.m. eastern time. That meant that I really needed to leave Tuscaloosa absolutely no later than 11:00 a.m. local time, as it's a three-hour drive (in good weather, something which is in short supply these days here in the Deep South) and I had to allow that extra hour to make up for the time difference.

But she didn't want me to leave. "You just have to have some chicken salad from this place downtown. I don't know how they do it, but their chicken salad is just the BEST, Mom. You HAVE to try it."

Hard to turn that down, you know. Good chicken salad is worth getting stuck in Atlanta traffic, I suppose. And certainly spending a couple of extra hours with my daughter is, especially when she just doesn't want me to leave.

So off we go. And all the while I'm calculating...

(well, if I get out by noon I still have a fighting chance... hit Cobb County by 4:00 p.m. and maybe, just MAYBE I won't sit for two hours. Okay, this is workable...)

And then we get caught. In traffic. In Tuscaloosa??? At 11:00 a.m.??? Well, not exactly a major traffic jam, but still -I count off 10 more minutes. Sheesh, I know I'm being ridiculous, but - you have to be familiar with Atlanta traffic to understand my concern.

I try to relax. It's not easy.

And then we arrive. And find a great parking place just a few steps down from the sandwich shop with the awesome chicken salad. So we get out and head down the street to enjoy it. And then my daughter stops dead in her tracks. "You know, Mom, we COULD go to Laura's mom's restaurant. It's REALLY cute and the food is great." Now we have a decision that needs to be made.

And the clock continues to tick.

I don't care hon - whatever you want to do is fine.

But I REALLY want you to try this chicken salad.

Ok, then - let's go.

But I REALLY want you to see Laura's mom's place. It's just so cute. You'll love it.

I'd like to see it. Would you rather go there?

Tell you what. Let's go get the chicken salad and we'll head over there for dessert. Her cake is so wonderful.

And the clock continues to tick.

Relax, for goodness sake, that little voice says to me. Relax, and enjoy these wonderful moments.
