Years back, I entered a flower arranging contest and won a First Prize. It was the only contest I ever entered, so I can still boast a 100% success rate at this art!

But it is fair to mention that my previous horticultural successes can be summed up by admitting that I have even been known to kill artificial plants! :-)

I live in Canary Islands, but came from England. Whether from an overdose of Wordsworth at an early age or the profusion of them in Britain's municipal parks, one thing I love is "A host of golden daffodils" in springtime.

It seems like anything and everything will grow here, especially in this fertile valley, but daffodils do "NOT" grow in a sub-tropical climate, because, I read after the first lot I tried a couple of years back didn't come up, daffodils have to have over winter frost apparently.

Still, I've never really accepted that I "couldn't" grow anything. After all, I can cultivate 7 foot weeds OK!

Well, I did it. I achieved the impossible!

In April, one of the bulbs I planted back in early Feb, that I'd been keeping in the house, COLD, burst forth into bloom. A perfect, miniature, golden daffodil!

It was quickly followed by about a dozen of its cousins and they flowered for weeks and weeks. As silly as this seems, it gave me a real sense of achievement. So, if life's getting you down or getting your business going seems impossible, here's just some small things you could do:

* Go and do something just for the heck of it

A simple pleasure: something you'll enjoy, something that can give you a sense of some achievement that will spur you on to greater things, by reminding you that you "can do it".

* If at first you don't succeed, find out why & try again

Coulda given up when the first daffs failed or when I read about the frost. And what would have happened? I'd have totally missed out on the child-like exhilaration I felt when I first saw MY perfect little flower.

And then my heart with pleasure fills, And dances with the daffodils.

* Realise that the impossible takes a little longer

... but it's well WORTH the wait!
