When the thought of moving to Salt Lake City first came to me, I received of warnings from well-intentioned friends. They cautioned I would be unable to get a decent cup of coffee, would be hounded by others in an attempt to convert me to a secret religion, and would have no opportunity to move ahead professionally. "After all," they reasoned, "it is a very ultra religious, male dominated state."
"When were you in Utah?" I asked. Interestingly, most had never been in the state. It was difficult to base my decision on their input.
Fortunately, I was raised by parents who taught me the value of not prejudging a situation, let alone a group of people, based on the opinions of others. My mother is a survivor of the Nazi occupation Belgium during World War II.
Coming to the States in 1949 to marry my father, who served in the U.S. Army, my mother told stories of the devastation and destruction due to prejudice and discrimination. She would share accounts about losing family and friends to the Nazis. Risking their own lives, she and her family would hide Jews, American soldiers and other allies during Gestapo raids.
Asking my mother how she had the courage to do what she did, her reply has always been, "When it's the right thing to do, you simply have to do it." Most would never guess my now 74-year-old mother, has done all she has. To most she is just another elderly woman. To me, she is one of my greatest heroes
My mother's experiences have taught me to be open-minded, live life to the fullest, stand up for what I believe in, be willing to take risks based on what I know is right, but most of all don't judge people as a group. She taught me to base my opinions on each individual encounter.
Determined not to let others' opinion of Salt Lake City stop me from moving here, I took a leap of faith. Before the final departure, I asked a few people about the weather in Utah.
Satisfied with the answer that it didn't snow much, imagine my surprise when I moved here in June of 1991 and it snowed within a couple days of settling into my home. Even more surprising was to read on license plates, "The Greatest Snow on Earth."
Not being extremely fond of the snow, I wondered if perhaps I had made a mistake. Contemplating my fate while taking a drive around the area, I was pleasantly surprised when I found an establishment where not only could I get a great cup of coffee, I could even get a cappuccino. Things were definitely looking up.
Waiting in anticipation during the first few months for missionaries to attempt to convert me to the "secret religion" it soon became apparent my well-intentioned friends back in the Bay Area of California were wrong. No such thing happened then, nor has it happened in the 12 years since I first moved to Salt Lake.
What has happened is that I have found Utah to be a pretty amazing place. A place where I have been able to build a successful business utilizing the skill of developing relationships with people from every walk of life. A skill I credit my mother to teaching me much about as I have gotten involved various professional organizations.
I'm not implying everything is perfect in "happy valley." There are times I do get frustrated with some of the politics such as in the inability to get a hate crimes bill passed here. In my frustration, I sometimes think of moving back to a more open-minded and diverse area. But it is also in that frustration that I can hear my mother's words, "When it's the right thing to do, you simply have do it."
For me, the right thing to do is to recognize that things are getting more progressive in the State. It is also to recognize that if change is going to take place, I have to be willing to be a part of that change. And change comes from building bridges with people from a variety of lifestyles and cultures. Bridges that can allow us to live with respect for each other's differences.
To me, it is in doing this, I simply know it is the right thing to do. Guess I'll have another cup of coffee.
