Attitudes of Gratitude: How to Give and Receive Joy Everyday of Your Life
By
M. J. Ryan
2009 was a horrible year for a lot of people I know. Me included. I don't recall it starting out to be a train wreck, but here at the end, in very cruel ways, it was. So much that I was careful not to wish too many folks, "Happy New Year" as 2010 slipped quietly into place.

The best I could do was to tell them sincerely, "I hope the new year will be better." And we agreed that would be nice -- for all of us. Some of the losses we were both trying to console each other for and avoid mentioning out loud have simply been too awful to process in the short time since they happened.

For me it's been especially hard to deal with the chirpy, upbeat "reach for the stars," keep-a-constant-positive-attitude tone that decorates most of the blogs and sites through which I regularly travel.

Even some of those authors seem to be whistling past their own personal graveyards this year. I notice more than one makes glancing reference to losses, set-backs, bitter disappointments and family tragedies met and handled -- somehow -- this year. So many of us walking wounded -- and barely.

This morning, I need to write and thank a wonderful friend for a particularly welcome Christmas gesture this year. I want to be able to segue into a longer letter that holds some news worth writing, but trying to put on a brave face and ignore the general awfulness of the past three months feels so dishonest ... and she deserves better than that. Our friendship itself deserves better than that. It dates back nearly 50 years -- years that have seen us each through trials we never imagined and certainly never wished for when we were young teens ... and high school challenges were the darkest cloud on our personal radar.

I cannot begin to put the story of my recent life in her Inbox for her to share. Not only is it too raw for me to write about, but this is not the kind of pain that divides. It spreads. And the last thing on earth I want to see is that. So I hold it close to me like a piece of molten lava, to keep its searing agony from touching anyone else. God help me, I don't know what else to do with it. I only know that putting it into words is not an option. I have no idea if it will ever be.

But I want her to know how much I appreciated this thing she did -- something so typical of her. It defines her in a precious way also beyond describing. But without the back-story whose words I cannot speak, the depth of my gratitude is lost. Just saying "thank you" is too routine. Too easily said; too easily heard. Too quick to fade away.

I want some kind of silent message system. Heart-to-heart. Like angel whispers. To tell her what this meant to me. What she means to me. I want the words to wiggle out from behind the hurt and find their way across the miles. To her. Where they belong. If there were truly a caring God ... there would be a way.

When working with a client who is a serious body builder that regularly injured himself during his training I said to him "As we sit here now facing each other... Take a couple of deep breaths.... And let your body move... as it lightly feels some of its injuries.
