It's the late l930's. I'd just started in the first grade. I remember how clumsy I felt walking to school because my shoes were three sizes too big. They were hand-me-downs from an older cousin. My father hadn't had a job in 3 years and if it wasn't for the hand-me-downs, it would have been the old sneakers I wore all summer. (I had to stuff paper inside because the soles were worn through.) So, clumsy or not, I was grateful for those shoes.

In the afternoon after school, I went to Mr Lieb's soda parlor. There were no bottle sodas - if you wanted a soda, Mr. Lieb mixed seltzer and syrup in a glass (price 5 cents). I would order a 2 cents plain (seltzer only - no syrup) and add, "Maybe a small squirt of cherry" and he would yell, "For a squirt, it's already a nickel soda," then he would feign reluctance, give a quick squirt from the cherry syrup dispenser and hand me my soda.

Then, for the additional price of 1 penny, I was allowed to read one of the unsold comic books.

You might ask how I could afford this rich afternoon of pleasure. Well, in those days, milk bottles carried a 3 cents deposit. My pal, Jimmy Gill, and I would search through people's garbage 'til we found a milk bottle for each of us - go to the deli - get our 3 cents and off to the soda emporium for an hour of comics and a 2 cents plain with a squirt.

All my memories of that early childhood were happy ones. I never gave a second thought to being poor, my father and mother gave me a home full of love and good humor. That's all that mattered.
