Heeding the Message of Synchronicity

My most profound brush with synchronicity occurred during a time of great personal turmoil. Every arena of my life -- social, financial, professional -- seemed to be crashing down around me. Depressed and at the point of giving up, I decided that my only chance for a new life was to move to another city and begin again. This last bit of hope seemed to die when I couldn't find any boxes to pack my few belongings.

Now, on a normal day, this would not have seemed to be such an insurmountable problem. But to me, during that painful time, it seemed the last straw. I had failed at everything I'd ever attempted and I was too pathetic to even find some lousy boxes. Surely I was alone in the Universe.

Depressed, I went for a random drive, my mind filled with dark thoughts. As I wandered aimlessly about, I was surprised to find a pile of boxes lying in the middle of the road. Amazingly --though this was one of the busiest streets in town -- the boxes hadn't been crushed and I was able to gather them without fear of being hit myself.

Faced with the (to me) miraculous gift of the boxes, I returned home, packed my belongings and moved on to a new and ultimately better phase of my life.

My story in itself is not very earthshaking. Surely the boxes had fallen off a truck and the driver hadn't needed them badly enough to retrieve them. This bit of synchronicity only had meaning to me because of its timing and my interpretation of the event.

From feeling abandoned and powerless, I suddenly felt a surge of hope. Perhaps my life wasn't as pointless as I thought. Perhaps Someone Somewhere cared whether I lived or died. This is the power of synchronicity. It can literally save a life. We are struck with awe and for one brief moment we are able to transcend the isolation of our lives.

How then can we best benefit from our psyche's gift of synchronicity? Hopcke, who has interviewed many people who have experienced the phenomenon, suggests that we simply be open to the unexpected and to the message inherent in these random meaningful events.

If heeded, they may point the path to a more fulfilling life. If ignored, they may repeat themselves until we are forced to attend to them. Despite our plans for our lives, we may find that our psyches have an altogether different direction in mind for us.

It is our choice whether we wish to follow these suggestions from the Universe or to blindly continue on the wrong path. However, synchronicity ignored may be opportunity lost.
