We modern beings may feel that we are beyond the influence of symbols, of universal myths, of ancient fears and instinctual desires. Sadly, we need only look at the hatred and destruction loosed during times of war to see the fearsome power that can be evoked by leaders who are charismatic and aware enough to harness the mysterious symbols and myths stored in the collective unconscious and to use them to influence their followers.

One of psychoanalyst Carl Jung's most groundbreaking theories involving the collective unconscious was that the psyche isn't confined to the personal universe. He maintained that the archetypes can and do cross the void between the inner and outer worlds. One way that this happens is through synchronicity -- the meaningful coincidences that we all encounter at one point or another in our lives.

Synchronicity has been described in a number of ways -- as a bridge between time and eternity, as the ˜falling together' of physical and psychic events, even as a moment of Tao. Jung himself referred to it as meaningful coincidence.

However it is described, synchronicity attests to the hidden order and unity that gives our lives direction. It is only through the archetype of the Self, which is programmed to seek wholeness and meaning, that we are able to appreciate events of synchronicity as more than causal coincidence.

Synchronicity is not a ˜cause and effect' event. It's a random occurrence -- maybe small, maybe not -- that makes one pause and wonder.

It's the phone call from the friend who's been out of your life for years, just at the very moment when you urgently need to speak to her but are unable to locate her. It's the sudden, uncharacteristic change in routine that results in the chance meeting of your soul mate.

It's the overheard conversation at a bus stop that gives you just the information you need to significantly change your life, just when you most need it. When synchronicity occurs, we suddenly feel that there is order and significance in the randomness of our lives. We suddenly know --without a doubt -- that our earthly journey has meaning and purpose.

Robert Hopcke, Jungian psychotherapist and author of "There are no Accidents,? points out that synchronicity often happens during times of transition. Our psyches appear to send us assistance in the form of a seemingly random event that occurs at precisely the right time. When we experience synchronicity, a life change may be on its way and it could take a random event to convince us that a new path lies waiting for us.
