People talk so much about "enlightenment" that it can become boring.
But it is the most exciting, compelling, stirring event of life! But you would be tragically mistaken if you assumed that everyone who used the word really has a hint of a trace of its deeper meaning.
The idea, of course, is as old as dirt, as civilization. Very, very ancient people were familiar with it. People knew about enlightenment before they knew about iron! In the very origin of writing, we find evidence that the "Enlightenment Tradition" was already ancient! This Way was the original "gift of the gods," brought by the "people of the sky," or "people of the stars."
This Tradition is the Way of Love, the Path of Light, the Way of Truth, and the Beautiful Way. Intercultural and interreligious, it belongs to no one religion, culture, or century. It embraces Jesus, the Buddha, Solomon, Patanjali, Al Hallaj, Lao Tzu, Navajo traditions, and earth-paths. It spans the entire spectrum of cultures and countries.
It is also "mysticism" -- a much-abused and misused word. The word is twisted by even journalists, academicians, and religious leaders--people who should all know better. A fortune-teller is not a "mystic," and neither is a magician. It has nothing to do with the "occult." But it has everything to do with the mind.
Modern mystics call themselves "psychonauts," for they are explorers of "inner space." (This is mentioned in my book Journey to the Center of the Soul: Mysticism Made Simple.)
The mystic embraces a philosophy called "monism." This dramatically says that there is only one Reality in the entire cosmos! It is Mind. Since you already have a mind, you are a part of It-- of Ultramind, ultimate Mind. It is this deeply unconscious galaxy or ocean of Mind that is the only Reality in all the universe! How can we believe that only this Mind exists, in a cosmos filled with a trillion trillion trillion objects? Mystics answer that the entire cosmos is the dream of this one Mind.
Taoist mystics say that, although "matter" is Mind, the enlightened person does not try to control the cosmos. Why? She relaxes into the certainty that the whole universe is already controlled by a powerful mega-mind called "Tao." We have not come to earth to learn to influence this Tao.
We have come to seek to learn to cooperate with it. She cultivates the gentle art of "going with the Flow," which we have dubbed "flo-going." This gives the enlightened a deep, imperturbable profundity of tranquility. This is living without resistance. Trusting this Mind is the mystical meaning of "faith." So, enlightenment quells fears and worries.
The Mind that dreams up the cosmos is perfect, flawless, stainless. If we see any imperfections in the cosmos, say mystics, that imperfection is really within us! How much more humble it is to say, "There is a problem with me," than to assert, "There is something wrong with the cosmos." So, enlightenment brings humility.
