The daily cycles of the Sun ... it's a feature of the physical world you can't miss, but just when humankind began to regard and treat the Sun as more than just something that makes life the way it is ... well, that moment in the evolution of consciousness is lost in the mists of history. Certainly the Sun's appearance in its majesty is a unfailing, essential occurrence. Life on earth literally could not exist otherwise. But scholars continue to search ... and wonder ... about just when and who first held the Sun in awe as a possible divine being -- a god to be worshiped, courted, studied, and measured as it went about its cyclical, seasonal work.

There is evidence that the Sumerians and possibly the Babylonians first used solar cycles to measure time, but the ancient Egyptians were the first to manage this with any reliability. Even then, their instruments weren't anything as finely tuned even as sundials. They were obelisk shaped stones that functioned more as calendars than clocks. When the Sun shone on them, they cast a shadow by which people could measure days, months, years, and seasons.

The patience, time, care, study, and engineering precision that went into the construction of this calendar is staggering to imagine. And yet the Egyptians weren't the only ancient culture to use stones and shadows and remarkable measurements over time to mark measurements of solar time -- using the changing position of the Sun itself. The eerie and famous circle of standing stone columns at Stonehenge, for example, marks the solstices.

At the dawn of the Summer Solstice, the rising sun forms a U-shaped shadow on the stones, a shadow which opens toward the light. And at Winter' Solstice, the setting sun again forms a U-shaped shadow that opens toward the waning light. The true purpose of Stonehenge beyond its function as an astronomical observatory remains a mystery ... and subject to continuing speculation. Some theorize it was once a temple to the Sun -- but one thing we know, which remains a clear and fascinating fact today, is the display of the Solstice phenomenon.
