Gazing at a piece of lapis lazuli, it's easy to imagine yourself looking at a piece of star-strewn sky, floating past flecks of white and gold, through shades of azure and ultramarine, a traveler through time and space and mind -- just like the voyage promised by the narrator of the Twilight Zone years and years ago. Its presence does indeed bring sensations of infinity, wisdom and peace.

• Lapis is sometimes listed as a birthstone for December and is associated with Zodiac signs Sagittarius, Capricorn and Libra.

• Lapis is a rock, not a mineral, combining several minerals including: lazurite, calcite (which create the white flecks and streaks seen in the stone -- and which actually decrease its value), sodalite, and pyrite (which create the gold streaks and flecks found in the stone -- and which, in contrast to calcite, increase the value of the stone)

• High quality Lapis has been mined for more than 6000 years in Afghanistan. Other sources include Siberia, Chile, Pakistan, the United States and Canada

• The colors of Lapis can range from a pale cerulean blue to a dark blue-violet.

• In ancient Egypt, Lapis was ground to a powder and (mixed with milk) used as paint, eye-shadow, and medicine -- specifically to relieve inflammation, ulcers and sores. It was also carved into vases and figurines. It was considered sacred to the Goddess Isis and associated with protection and inner tranquility.

• The Romans used it as a aphrodisiac and an antidote to poison.

• Lapis is considered a stone of friendship and truth and a powerful aid for those seeking spiritual development. Its metaphysical properties include abilities to:

• Strengthen psychic awareness, intuition and ESP -- particularly if worn or placed over the brow chakra
• Expand one's perceptions, frame of reference, total understanding, tolerance and "point of view"
• Improve sleep and cure insomnia, provide insight into dreams, promote meaningful visions
• Dispel fear and jealousy, aid in the free expression of positive and honest emotions
• Energize the throat chakra -- and thus improve communication and mutual understanding in relationships
• Promote spiritual wisdom, inner harmony and deep self-knowledge
• Guard against psychic attacks, vertigo and depression
• Relieve mental stress, bring serenity and peace of mind
• Enhance positive magic and karmic release, aid in channeling, facilitate contact with guardian spirits

Clearly, this takes a special kind of courage ... and bestows a special kind of wisdom.

• It is a marvelous stone for creative artists, writers, performers, teachers, ministers and intuitive counselors ... anyone for whom "clarity and communication" are essential elements in their efforts.

• There are mystics who say Lapis existed "before time was born" and that it still promotes the connection between material reality and the realms of heaven, that it cleanses the aura, increases physical and psychic energy, and supports the general well-being of the body. Sleeping with a piece of it can strengthen messages from the subconscious and fortify the connections between the different levels of the mind.

• Edgar Cayce suggested that one wear or carry a piece of Lapis at all times. From its list of virtues, it's easy to see why. It is an excellent meditation tool, stone for pendulum work, or aid in divining practices such as reading Tarot cards, Astrology charts, dreamwork or scrying

• However, Lapis is a relatively soft stone and requires special care, cleaning and recharging so as not to damage its surface and color. (Even wearing it in a hot bath can cause color changes and problems.) It is easily scratched and is best recharged by placing it in sunlight for an hour or so, placing it out under the light of a Full Moon for the night, or placing it close to a living plant.
