What is the spiritual person's response to sheer pleasure? To answer, let's look first at the structure of nature; there, we can often find valuable clues regarding our life design and our destiny.

The human brain contains several sensitive areas known as "pleasure centers." They are called this because their only known function is to respond to, and actually to create/amplify, pleasure.

When touched with mild electric current, the pleasure-center catapults you into a realm of astronomical ecstasy! It fills you with such immeasurable and illimitable rapture that you never want to come "back." (Other species exhibit similar results.) What can we infer from this known fact?

The brain is immersed or embedded in electrical current, which means that a pleasure-center can be triggered at any moment. "Nature," or God, wants you to be "high," and even "higher" by far than you can imagine. But we do not need dangerous drugs, with perilous addictions, to get as high as Alpha Centauri!

Under the proper conditions, the brain can make itself higher than any mind-blasting drug.

And there is still more: As a kind of "back-up" system, the brain manufactures an entire "family" of euphorics-- natural drugs whose only function is to elevate mood. There are about thirty-five euphorics, more powerful exponentially than heroin or the codons, manufactured by your brain and released into the blood.

Again, nature does obviously want you to have a good time!

But how do we release these drugs? Or how do we self-stimulate the activation of pleasure-centers? Both systems, amazingly, are turned on by interior stillness, or by Love. This is often discovered during deep meditation. Intellectual and negative emotional activities inhibit both "ecstatogenic" (ecstasy-creating) systems. But both are stimulated by an extended period of interior stillness. And both are mega-excited by Love.

Meditation, which looks like "doing nothing," has survived for thousands of years. But if it really did nothing, it would have perished from disuse millennia in the past. Why did it survive? Why do meditators continue to meditate?

Because of the rewards. After long practice, meditation triggers the ecstatogenic response. (Note: Meditation is not visualization or affirmation, but a simple mind-clearing into a though-free condition.) Sages who have mastered meditation call the resulting state "bliss," and insist that this is the most natural condition of the human mind.

We simply must learn the art of allowing it to occur, since we cannot force bliss. And when we become distracted by the material, intellectual, and emotional worlds, the interior "static" becomes so noisy that we can no longer hear the still, small voice of bliss. But that is certainly no evidence that it is not "talking."
