God forbid I should get too big for my britches! Fearful of the blinding effect of ego inflation, I bow to humility as the ultimate antidote for grandiosity. To make any spiritual progress at all we must conquer the impulse to puff up with self-importance. It helps to remember that we are nothing more than mere grains of sand in the macrocosm. Humility is the key to an expanded consciousness.

Humility neutralizes untempered pride and self-aggrandizement. It softens us by releasing the rigid certainty of excessive self-assurance. Humility reflects our awareness of the mystery and reclaims our innocence. Humility allows us to say: "I don't know." "I need help." "I'm lost." "I'm afraid, overwhelmed, sad." "I surrender." "We're all equal." "I'm only an instrument of the Divine." "I love you." "I'm sorry." "Thank you." True humility is acceptance of all that is, without judgment. It reminds us that we're not in charge. Humility allows us to gratefully embrace and honor the Divine Plan as we relinquish our personal agenda to a Higher Order. It reminds us of our place in the Universe. Humility, the conduit for surrender, enables us to give up when our smugness dissolves into helplessness and we can only yield to the great River of Life that carries us forward, regardless of resistance and blindness.

So, how do we become humble? Outmoded torturous practices of purification, self-criticism, supposedly promoted humility. But suffering can't be the only way to break down the ego in order to taste the sweet nectar of humility. Self-torment used to ward off inflation does nothing more than harden us in a struggle with self-judgment.

False humility is the opposite of grandiosity. Fearful of getting too carried away with ourselves, we try to be humble by dimming our light and downplaying our gifts, power, achievement, wisdom. Ironically this only waters down the potency of our being. We deny our birthright of brilliance because we don't trust ourselves to carry this spiritual heritage unpretentiously. Humility demonstrates that no one is better than anyone else. Everyone is equal in Source's eyes -- all bright stars in this Universe. So why should we be ashamed of our magnificence? There's no need to feel guilty when we dare to shine.

Humility is not a rationalization for under extension. True humility doesn't require self-abasement. Self-diminishment only expresses fear of being big--not humility. Ironically, the acceptance of one's magnitude is an expression of humility--the acknowledgment of our greatness without attaching self-importance to it. Humility allows us to display this largeness as an invitation to others to also reveal their excellence -- as a statement of ordinariness in a Universe overflowing with miracles. If everyone were humble enough to allow their amplitude to fearlessly flow through them, our world would be filled with Olympic athletes unafraid to go the distance into possibility--from a place of commonality, mutual respect and reverence.
