Some phenomena can't be explained rationally and perhaps we shouldn't try. I strongly recommend Martha Beck's book, Finding Your Own North Star.

However, you may also enjoy Ms. Beck's previous book, Expecting Adam.

Advised that her child would be born with Down's syndrome, she opted to keep the baby and found herself caught up in a series of adventures beyond the understanding of her Harvard doctoral program. (If you're an academic yourself, you'll have a good laugh at Beck's story of pompous academics talking about a Smurf pool. "Good fellow, that Smurf!")

We all could use some magic these days, so here's a special exercise. Try it for a week and let me know what happens!

Imagine that you have had a message from your favorite psychic -- someone with a pipeline to the universe. This psychic can be human or superhuman, male or female. I know one person who gets messages from his cat. Whatever works!

Here's the message: "For the next few days, the universe has promised to put a bit of magic into your life at least once a day. However, the magic will not be planned ahead -- you have to recognize it when it comes. Every day, your task is to find the magic."

If this is too whimsical for you, imagine that some eccentric millionaire has promised to send you $100,000 (net of tax!) if you can identify at least one magic moment in your day for a week. Finding magic may be a stretch -- but for this kind of money, many of us would make the effort.

Whether you believe in magic (and some people insist on it!), I've found that intuition, serendipity, magic and more, all work best when approached with a light touch. As I say in my ebooks and classes, you can't pound on the door. You have to knock gently and wait for an answer.
